This is a very interesting 17th-century Vauban fortification which has very commanding views over the region. Worth the trip up the hill to see how the French established these defenses at the time of their empire. There is also a zoo here, and was surprised to see it had big cats. There is also a Resistance museum.

Excellent place. I just didn't have enough time to see everything :-( The zoo is quite good with all the monkeys, the fortress itself is very impressive and offers good vistas over Besancon and the river Doubs. You'd need a minimum of four hours to see the essentials. Very good for families with children, they will have a whale of... More

This zoo is incredible when knowing that your upon a hill, and that you can admire the whole city (especially the old town) from the top. Lots of animals to see, lots of fun. very nice place to visit.

So much history in the citadel and a bit sad to see it turned into an insectorium, aquarium and home for a few exotic animals. Beyond this, the Franch-Comtois Museum is great and the Vauban history exhibit is very good though.

The zoo has been built in to the citadel, making it a pleasurable maze to traverse. You find yourself drawn to not only the animals but also the architecture. And for a mere 8 Euros it's a great way to spend two or three hours. Check out the flamingo enclave especially, there are strange red birds amongst the flamingos that'll... More

It all started on a nice sunny day of July, I was looking to take a walk along the city or "Randonnée" in French. I started to walk the road up the Citadelle which by the way it's a heavy walk but satisfying if you like it. Upon arrival to the Citadelle entrance you can not miss the magnific view... More

We walked up from the bottom, thinking parking would be scarce. It was not. The walk was long and hot. I wanted to go for the Vauban museum. Unfortunately that part was only one room.

I was very surprised. The view over Besancon is worth the entry fee alone yet the museums are fantastic (especially the French Resistance museum). They have a zoo as part of the citadel including lions and tigers. A definite must. You will need say 2 hours in the citadel and if you are energetic walk up the 300 or so... More
