The monkeys.

I'm in agreement with most other visitors regarding the museums but I'm surprised nobody mentioned the monkeys at the entrance. There are several at the base of the moat with no... read more

We enjoyed the views of the river and city from the top and the museum about the French resistance was really interesting but had some quite traumatic photographs. We were not happy to see the plight of the monkeys at the entrance as they didn't have anything to do and were just sat looking quite forlorn. They also had other... More

I'm in agreement with most other visitors regarding the museums but I'm surprised nobody mentioned the monkeys at the entrance. There are several at the base of the moat with no vegetation of any kind or no shade it seems from the sun. There are no facilities of any kind for them to climb as there would be in a... More

Lots of things to see in there in relation with the region and with the history of WWII. You can spend a whole day at the citadel, it's accessible by foot or by bus. Well worth a visit if you are in town.

We always take visiting friends. And if we are feeling mean we make them climb up from the city. A museum. Great views. And a zoo. Great day out and not expensive. Worth travelling to.

We walked up the hill to the citadel and were surprised by the diversity of things available. There was a small zoo and 2 separate museums that were well curated. You can easily spend at least a half a day if not a full day (if you bring a picnic lunch) here taking in the sites. Don't forget to walk... More

One of the main attraction of the city of Besancon, full of history. It was designed by Vauban. Not to be missed if you go to Besancon.

What a beautiful - interesting place. The view is amazing, climb to the fortress's walls pass from both side of the site and admire both the masterpiece planing of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the military engineer of King Louis XIV, and the grand view of Besançon and its surroundings.

Reading some of the other reviews on ta some people enjoyed this attraction, sadly we weren't one of them. Even though we had read up about the Citadel it failed to live up to our expectations in more ways than one. They have a park & ride from just beyond the town which was unnecessary as you could have parked... More

Lots to see and do at the Citadel. Wandered the ramparts, visited the zoo, and experienced the museum of the Resistance and Holocaust. Allow at least half a day to see everything.

You could take the bus or car, but it's actually more fun to walk up there all the way from the city center.
