What a beautiful - interesting place. The view is amazing, climb to the fortress's walls pass from both side of the site and admire both the masterpiece planing of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the military engineer of King Louis XIV, and the grand view of Besançon and its surroundings.

Reading some of the other reviews on ta some people enjoyed this attraction, sadly we weren't one of them. Even though we had read up about the Citadel it failed to live up to our expectations in more ways than one. They have a park & ride from just beyond the town which was unnecessary as you could have parked... More

Lots to see and do at the Citadel. Wandered the ramparts, visited the zoo, and experienced the museum of the Resistance and Holocaust. Allow at least half a day to see everything.

You could take the bus or car, but it's actually more fun to walk up there all the way from the city center.

Because we stayed in Besancon for one night and all the shops were closed on sunday we visited La Citadelle. It is a very large territory on the top of the hill which has a very small zoo with a very few animals which ramble on citadelle's walls and a small acquarium. If you have absolutely nothing to do and... More

This is a must if you are in Besancon. The best part are the views from the citadel walls to the city and down to the valley. There are two restaurants inside, a couple of museums and a zoo. The Resistance museum has an audio guide in english.

Adaptive reuse at its finest- an old military fortification converted to hold several museums and a zoo.

I was disappointed the citadel, because I was expecting something different than the mish-mash of attractions housed in the facility. The fact that there's a zoo there brings oodles of elementary school kids, at least the day I was there, and their shrieks detract from any attempt to imagine the history of the citadel. They are also oddly out of... More

Rather than the steep walk up we took the bus from the car park, only €1.40 fare. Extensive views of the city from the battlements and interesting museums, especially the resistance and deportation museum. Only slight problem is the zoo at the rear small cages for some of the animals.
