I knew very little about this attraction, but I was very moved by it. You get four benefits for the price of one: 1) an in-depth view of the French Resistance going through the museum; 2) an understanding of the fortress building Vauban who designed this gorgeous, imposing Citadelle; 3) a quirky, but sweet zoo for children with all kinds... This ranks high on my list for one of the strangest places I have ever visited, but it was highly educational and a moving experience. I did not know what to expect. My husband and I were staying at the Hotel Le Sauvage (which I highly recommend) that is located in a former convent beneath the Citadelle. My husband calls... More

As a view junky I would recommend you go - views in all directions, showing the true layout of the land in the area, and the urban sprawl that is Besancon. The history and architecture are also very interesting. If you're into your views, and like a bit of history, I suggest you go.

We visited the citadelle so that my husband could go to the Resistance museum, whilst the children could go to the zoo and aquarium. We checked opening times etc online and were assured all would be well with the visit. We were therefore suprised to find AFTER we had purchased tickts that the resistance exhibition was closed for cleaning until... More

Group of friends looking for something to do citadel listed as main attraction so why not. We were a group of out of breath panting wheezing tourists by the time we reached the ticket office. But it was worth it. This place was a wonder. Great views of the city and the surrounding area, a zoo ?? in a castle... More

We spent a full day at the Citadelle, even though it was off-season (December). The construction is awesome, as are the views. Though very little is in English, and the audio tape was not particularly informative, we were able to learn enough from the available materials to understand the background and building of the Citadelle. Besides the Citadelle are a... More

We were visiting Besancon for the weekend and you could not fail to notice the imposing citadel sitting above the town, so we decided to visit. There is an entry fee of c.10 or 11 euros per adult but we felt the cost was well worth paying as there is plenty to do inside. As well as be able to... More

This a fortress on top of the hill, so put on your hiking shoes or take the bus. We only had an hour or so before it got dark (the downside of travelling in autumn) so could not get to visit the museums inside but were impressed with the building (vauban knew his stuff!) the site and the outside zoo.... Enjoyable walk and view of the city. Besancon is real gem. Beautiful little city, with lovely surrounding. And citadelle is a must place to visit if you ever get a chance.
