This place is remarkable. They have taken a well preserved world heritage site and added the attraction of the zoo. And, you also have the option of getting a fair bit of cardio on your way up.

The citadel is a very impressive building, and the various museums and the zoo provide something for everyone. The only thing that we found rather annoying was the fact that the multimedia show took quite long too start (after three rounds of announcements in three languages we decided to leave).

Everything impressive here. The massive stone of the citadel, the audio-visual of the history (in the church) and last but not least the resistance museum.

Well organized with lots to see. The way up is tough but one may use a little train going up the hill. All in all a must to see especially when with children. The main attractions in this nice pastoralic city.

It is a very impressive citadel, with lots of things to do there. Besides the beautiful views to all directions (walk on and along the walls), there are 4 museums, the most interesting one is the resistance museum. There is even a zoo inside, which is very unique. If you walk up to the citadel - it is a steep... More

This citadel and the string of forts on the loop of the city is why Besancon is here. Easily defensible. Overview of city from the citadel alone is worth trip. Additionally there are excellent historical displays and presentations regarding the distant past and the Marquis during WWII. Beautiful grounds and views of Besancon. Don't miss excellent multilingual audio visual history... More

The Citadelle is great, but if the weather is bucketing down as it was on our visit, then possibly not!? It really is a great place though - I would love to see it in good weather, but we are only here for one day. I would recommend, but check the weather as there is lots outside!

Amazing place! Absolutely beautiful views, there's a zoo inside which is a little scarce but a must see. There's a insectarium as well as a noctarium (rats etc), the aquarium is also a little scarce but you can touch some of the fish so it's also a must see with children. Deserves a whole day to visit to see the... More

Spectacular visit, full of history. The museum of deportation is well documented. Not advised for kids below 10 years old, some pictures are very disturbing. Beautiful view on the city. The place is accessible by car till the entrance, you have to follow the sign " citadelle access difficile". It means the access is difficult but by car there are... More
