From the outside, this church is not imposing. But when you enter, you will see straight ahead why it is well worth a visit. Ste-Madeleine holds one of the last intact rood screen in the world and it is stunning. Rood screens, which the Catholic Church began removing in the 17th century, were elaborate iron, wood or marble constructions designed to separate the sanctuary from the nave visually and physically. The idea was that the altar was too sacred to allow common people to approach it. As a result of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, this concept fell into well-deserved disfavor. Unfortunately, instead of just removing these wonders and putting them somewhere else, most all of them were just destroyed by being parceled out for the sculptures, metals, whatever. The Crucifixes at the top of the screens, however, were usually reinstalled behind or above the altars. The rood screen at Ste-Madeleine is just about the height of late Medieval or early Renaissance art.

A lovely well tendered church. We visited on a lovely sunny day and it was nice just to sit and enjoy the peace, quiet and admire the beautiful interior.

Took a while to track down as it's on the edge of the old town (turn left then right at the end of ruelle des chats) but glad we did. Impressive stone rood screen and lovely stained glass windows.

If you have only enough time to visit one attraction in Troyes, make it this one! The rood screen is amazing - it is stone lace, and you should just sit and stare in wonder at the craftsmanship. There is wonderful stained glass as well, and unlike the tall gothic edifices in the rest of the town you can see it from close to.

This small church, in addition to its "stone lace" screen has the most amazing collection of stained glass windows. The Jesse Tree and the creation windows are probably my favorite windows ever.

The church has three things for the visitor to admire. The statue of St Martha with her very sad face. The rare C16th rood screen. There's also some very fine stained glass including a magnificent Jesse window. I agree that it's a must when you visit Troyes but with the strange opening hours you may be disappointed.

The Eglise Ste-Madeleine is one of the lesser-known churches in Troyes but it's well worthe a visit. It's one of the few chruches in France that has kept it's rood screen (also known as choir screen) and is therefore classified as a National Monument (already in 1840!) There are also some very nice statues and stained-glass windows. Make sure you don't miss the garden.

A beautiful church that should form part of any visit to Troyes. The rood screen in particular made me enjoy the visit but the wood carvings were excellent too!

Visited this as part of a walking tour of the older part of the city. So glad that we did as the interior is exceptional. The stain glass windows are stunning and each tell amazing stories. Fantastic
