Liked it very much, helps to understand Judaism and its links to other religions... should have come there with my nephews.

We loved the bilingual tour that you organized for our extended family. It was wonderful to learn about the history and architecture of Troyes. We were moved by the amazing story of the resilience of your congregation.

A charming young woman gave us a fascinating tour of this ancient building - based around four 16th century houses and totally refurbished over the last fifty years or so. We learned a lot about the history of the Jewish population of Troyes over the centuries and of course about Rachi, the great Jewish scholar. Lots to see, lots to discover and a delightful guide into the bargain. Who could hope for more?

The Synagogue and centre is situated in the heart of old Troyes, a beautiful and almost unspoilt area of timber framed houses from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Centre is housed in a series of beautifully restored buildings and includes a Synagogue and an extensive library.
The library includes 2 video presentation areas, the first in English as well as French, the second an animated reconstruction of mediaeval life in Troyes with Disney-like production standards.
The highlight of our tour was to be shown the quite remarkable interactive digital recreation of a Torah linked throughout to the relevant commentaries all translated into English and including facsimiles of Torah portions from communities in different countries.
Philippe was a marvellous guide, as well as having been involved in the creation of the interactive Torah.

For anyone with even a passing interest in history and religious texts, it is well worth visiting both this beautiful city and magnificent Centre.

We took a tour of the Rashi House and it was the highlight of our trip. Alexi gave us the tour.

Wish the signs where in English but they worked hard and made us feel very welcome.

A small dedicated group has restored the Troyes Synagogue and Learning Centre dedicated to Rashi, the Medieval scholar and Torah commentator.

After a comfortable one-hour train ride from Paris Gare de l’Est, we arrived in Troyes. A short walk brought us to Maison Rachi. An enthusiastic and informal welcome by Manon increased our anticipation of our private English-language tour which I had arranged by email from Canada. This tour truly surpassed our expectations. Communication pre-tour, during the tour and afterwards has been a pleasure.

Manon is very knowledgeable and passionate about this project, having been involved in the process from the outset. Besides imparting her knowledge, she was able to answer our questions (and there were many) as we progressed through the tour.

Because part of the house is left in the rundown pre-restoration state, one is able to marvel at the transformation of this property.. the synagogue has been enlarged, a replica of Rashi’s learning centre has been created and a library and learning centre for current community use have been established.

We highly recommend a day trip from Paris or side-trip if you are visiting Champagne. You need to reserve your tour before you go as Maison Rachi is not open to the public.

Make sure you allow enough time to walk in the Old town, visit the Alexandre Israel square and its outdoor restaurants or enjoy one of the restaurants in the quaint Ruelle Des Chats..

This is why I went to Troyes. I was interested in Rashi, of whom I knew a very little bit, and learned quite a bit more. There is a mandatory tour, given in French. Some of it is about Jewish history in Troyes, about Jewish religion and practice, about which I know quite a lot. Still I learned about Rashi’s Jewish life. The guide was charming and knowledgeable despite not being Jewish herself. I loved this visit. The tour took about 75 minutes and you must have a reservation. Totally worth it.
