About
In 1871 Eugène Mercier began an innovative project of digging his Champagne cellars: “Count in kilometers and not in meters” he told the architects. A few years later, visitors armed with curiosity were inspired by the discovery of no less than 18 kilometers of impressive underground tunnels! Come along yourself to discover the Maison Mercier onboard the little train and travel through part of our cellars!

Exploring Champagne
Jul 2020
I was rather surprised by the whole area of Epernay and the Champagne story in itself. Never dove much into it all but this was an eye opener. We received audio guides for the tour which were quite nice, I do still prefer when there is a person explaining it all, however that is also difficult especially as our party had 3 different nationalities. It was really cool learning about how the area came about! Great for visitors who can't speak French, however it is a little pricer to only receive one glass of champange at the end (you can opt for more at a price). Would do it again.

Wonderful experience - Mr Mercier; innovative, adventurous and kind; what a man!

Visit of Mercier is special and interesting for kids thanks to the little train.
Amazing caves; Mr Mercier approached excellent artists to embellish them for the enjoyment of his workers; what a man :).
We brought back beautiful posters of marketing by Mercier - so happy they had them on sale in the shop.
Excellent quality champagne served at the tasting.
Will certainly go back !

Good introduction to a champagne cellar

Train ride through the cellars a little cliches but fun

Castellane was much more informative, less formal but felt a little tired. Go there to learn

Covid calamity

What could have been an enjoyable look at a huge network of tunnels was ruined by a total disregard for social distancing. Mercier has paid only lip-service to protecting its visitors during a global pandemic; prominent spacing indicators and hand sanitiser at reception make it look like they are taking things seriously, but once you start the tour, you are crammed into large elevators with less than 30cm space between guests and the "guide" even encouraged people to move closer together. At various point we were shepherded into other confined spaces and made to wait in close proximity to one-another. Audio guide was good, but I agree with another reviewer that the joyless "guides" do no guiding at all and do not in any way enhance the experience.

Champagne train cool with kids, but bland Champagne.

Little underground train that takes you around the cellar with audio guide, and a nice video, cool with kids. Their marketing is their strongest point, but the Champagne itself is quite bland.

Slick tour but not really informative
Jul 2020 • Couples
The tour starts in the modern entrance hall with the impressive 200,000 bottle oak barrel. There was a short intro video and, although there is a “guide”, your info comes from a multi lingual phone style handset. After descending in a lift you board an automated train for a slow trundled through the underground storage galleries with your audio guide pointing out things of interest along the way. It’s a bit impersonal and the info provided was factual rather than interesting. There was no opportunity to ask anything and there was no interaction with the “guide”. On the plus side this tour showed a fair bit of the underground storage galleries and gave some historical info about the Mercier brand and the basics of champagne production. There was virtually no walking involved so would suit those with restricted mobility and you do get a glass of bubbly at the end of the tour ... and there’s no pressure to buy!
I left feeling that, although Mercier had invested a lot in producing a slick presentation, it was all a bit automated and lacking in human interaction. My recommendation to Mercier - for what it’s worth - would be to bin the handsets and hire some real guides with the personality and charisma to tell the Mercier story and bring it to life - so much better than an audio guide.
A bit of a good effort that doesn’t really do what it’s meant to.

Need to book. Somewhat automated tour (Cinema and train) but enjoyable and interesting getting the history on Mercier and seeing the enormous caves. Enjoyed the full three glasses of their different champagnes and is clearly cheaper the buy there than in the shops at home. Can be found toward the and of the Av, De champagne.

Mercier has marketed itself always as good champaign for a reasonable price. The tour is one of the cheaper ones along Avenue de Champagne and just as interesting. You'll be seated in a small train through the 18km of cellars which was hosted a car race. Just don't buy your bottles in the shop, they're cheaper in the local supermarket.

If you’re after an inexpensive and informative tour of the underground caves then this is for you. The little train ride makes things a bit cheesy but by the same token it works. A worthwhile experience!
