Beautiful Gothic Church
Oct 2019 • Solo
I had read about it, but actually saw the flying buttresses from behind the Cathedral, which is quit high. I walked to it easily.

You must enter from the side, because the front door is not accessible. It has many stained glass windows that exhibit the same quality as Chartres Cathedral. Worth a visit.

I captured pictures of a small black Madonna off to one side. Not sure she’s original to the church.

An unmissable counterpoint to Notre Dame Cathedral
Sep 2018 • Couples
St.Pierre is a wonderful old church in desperate need of some major restoration and it is painfully obvious that it is the poor relation in the Notre Dame family. However, it has some wonderful 700 year old stained glass windows and a simplicity of design that is appealing. Do visit when in Chartres and walk the riverwalk to appreciate the lower town area.

A bit surreal
Aug 2018 • Solo
From the outside, a very large church in the lower town, that could be a cathedral in many a town. This one provides a very strange feeling of neglect, even the floor is slightly covered with dust. And yet, in spite of this derelict aspect, some work is going on, and most of the statues are covered with plastic protection. I visited in the morning and was almost alone in this vast church. some beautiful views and an eerie feeling. I really enjoyed this surprsing aspect. Do not expect the usual cathedral / church visit.

Another beautiful church.
Jul 2018 • Couples
Although they are presently restoring the inside it is worth a visit. During the lumiere the exterior is beautifully lit up.

Renovation in progress
Jun 2018 • Solo
I saw this church from the train when coming into Chartres and decided to 'find it' - It looks impressive from the outside, alas they are doing quite a lot of work on it on the inside so it was difficult to see exactly how the church would look when the works completed. Impressive organ case, and windows -I will go back on another visit just to see what they did.

Historical church with beautiful stained glass
May 2018 • Couples
This location was the site of a Benedictine abbey by the 7th century. The oldest part of the current church was built around 1000 AD but was vulnerable to attack due to its location outside of the protective walls of the town. After a huge fire in 1134 which destroyed most of the cathedral and much of the town itself, in the 12th and 13th centuries the original church was replaced by new construction which continued into the mid 14th century. The church is continuing significant further repair and conservation work in 2018 but its beautiful stained glass windows and other features still can be viewed despite the ongoing work. This is definitely worth your time to visit!

Worth the visit, especially during Chartres en lumières
Aug 2017 • Couples
Great place, worth the visit! It’s a massive church, a bit neglected but beautiful. The gardens are great and during the “Chartres en lumières” period, this is one of the most beautiful sceneries to see.

14th century stained glass, undergoing renovation
Mar 2018 • Couples
This church, which is quite large for a parish church, is undergoing renovation inside, although that might be more with updating electricity and such stuff, than really the renovation that is needed to restore its former glory. Due to the renovation, the choir and ambulatory are closed off, and seeing the stained glass in the choir is tricky. However, the other stained glass windows can be viewed without trouble. There is a panel with some information, and at least stating the theme of each window. Otherwise the church is quite bare, and need some cleaning.

not quite as cared for
Aug 2017 • Couples
Not on the same scale as the cathedral, but still lovely to visit while walking through town. Restoration has not progressed as far, so it is interesting to compare the structure with the other cathedral.

Surely the Eglise has seen better days
Jun 2017 • Solo
I was impressed by the outside of the Eglise, highly impressive buttresses attract you, but the inside looked sad and gloomy. There is still very attractive painted glass inside, but the place looked neglected. I was the only person inside the Eglise, and then a couple of people came and went. I hope the place gets restored to its glory, the painted glass is worth the visit.
