Stunning massive cathedral in gothic style from 12th and 13th century. The interior has major restoration going on but plenty to see between the great number of statues both on the outside and inside as well as fantastic stained glass windows with each tiny square...More

Usually when we think of Notre Dame cathedral the mind defaults to the lovely cathedral in Paris. And yet, 1 hour away there is Chartres cathedral, the 12 century original gothic architecture, stained glass, flooring and decorations leaving the visitor in pure ecstasy at the...More

I first saw Chartres in 1976, then 1979, and finally this year, each time was a marvelous experience. This year brought a huge shock as I saw that the interior is not just being cleaned but is being dramatically adorned to match someone's idea of...More

I suspect that the renovation of the interior will take longer than the original construction! In any event, windows are fabulous and i for one approve of the restoration approach.

The stone carvings inside and out compliment the amazing glass windows (Opera glasses or a monocular advisable for a close up view). Walk around the cathedral to appreciate the size and complexity of the structure and our front look for the pointers directing medieval pilgrims...More

This is a huge cathedral dating back to the 10th and some of the windows are from the 11th century the blue virgin and they are spectacular. The cathedral is undergoing a very controversial rennovation but the height and the stained glass windows of this...More

Make sure you find the labyrinth in the floor. There is some construction/restoration which will be beautiful when done, but kind of a bummer.

A wonderful and awe inspiring site. It is undergoing a contriversial renovation (which is really a cleaning) to restore it it's original condition. The few drop curtains do not take away from the magnificence of the interior. Stroll around the perimeter for a complete grasp...More

Admission to the Cathedral is open and free. There are tours in English at 12 Noon and 2:45pm which also includes the crypt. These tours cost 10€ and can be purchased in the gift shop right before the tour. Welcome!!

Hello. You can get on Metro 4 at Odéon towards Montrouge and get off at Montparnasse. There are trains about every hour between Paris Montparnasse and Chartres. Hope that helps!
