About
Chambord is the emblem of the French Renaissance through Europe and the world. The Domain of Chambord is made up of the château, a village, farms and a wooded area. The domain of Chambord is completely enclosed within a wall, all 5,440 hectares of it. That’s the equivalent of the city of Paris! It is the largest enclosed forest in Europe. The entire site has been the property of the state since 1930; when the public estate was created, article 230 of the law dated 23 February 2005 stated that the possessions making up the domain were given over to it without restriction or exceptions.

- JohnKingston upon Thames, United Kingdom38 contributionsSuperbChateau de Chambord is a spectacular architectural masterpiece. It was designed , possibly with inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci. It has a symmetrical plan even though it evolved over my centuries. It was busy, but never felt crowded like Chenonceau. It has a fascinating double spiral staircase that enables 2 people to climb 2 staircases simultaneously and watch each other through the gaps! Superb views from the terrace of surrounding area. One of my two favourite Loire chateaux.Thank you for your feedback. Glad to hear you had a great time at Chambord! - Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia1,216 contributionsMassive Chateau with much to be seenOne of the more well known chateaus in France, this chateau was used mostly as a getaway and hunting lodge by royalty since its inception. Book tickets ahead of time to save time. Entry was free for kids under 18 yrs old, but check ahead. Definitely rent a histopad which will paint a very good picture of the history and what took place here. Many great pictures to be taken. There are multiple floors to visit and lots of steps, so be prepared. Didn't see any lifts, so those with wheelchairs, strollers, and canes alike had to negotiate the stairs the same as everyone else. Nice views from atop the chateau and there's a great exhibition on the roof in one of the rooms about how many items from the Louvre were secreted away here in 1940 when the Nazis overran Paris. Bathrooms and cafe available inside the chateau on the ground level in the courtyard. Parking was a flat fee for the day (6 Euros for cars). Restaurants available just outside the Chateau as well along with wine shops. Nice gift shop at the chateau exit. Great visit.Thank you for your visit and your opinion. It is true that you have to use the stairs. We lend canes and wheelchairs at our reception points for the comfort of our visitors. For people with reduced mobility, we recommend the ground floor of the dungeon and the gardens. There is also a version of the HistoPad that allows visitors to access all the content, including the reconstructed rooms, without having to go upstairs. With the satisfaction of our visitors in mind, we are currently looking into the accessibility of the different floors of the château for people with reduced mobility. By paying for parking, all visitors contribute to the upkeep and preservation of the 5,440 hectares of the Domaine national de Chambord, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. Parking P2 near the footbridge leading to the reception hall costs €5 (compared with €6 for P0). If you're coming back several times, there's also a 10-parking/10€ offer. We hope to see you soon.Written September 25, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 24, 2023
- IrishJohnB134 contributionsVery impressiveThis is a huge chateau second only in size to Versailles in France. It is immense and in the largest forest in France. It is remarkably impressive and the view from the rooftop terrace is also remarkable. The only drawback is that it is completely unfurnished so it is hard to get a sense of what life was like in this huge structure. We are pleased to read you liked your visit at Chambord. Thanks for your comment. Furniture can be found mainly on the first floor in the suites of the 17th and 18th century. Chambord is first of all a Renaissance château. At that time it was inhabited and there was no furniture except at the arrival of the king, Francis the 1st i.e. just a few times during his reign. It is every bit the fairy tale and is even more breathtaking in real life than in the photos. We pre-purchased tickets, but didn’t really need to, as there was barely a queue when we went on a Thursday around the middle of the day in early October. We got an audio guide, but I found it slightly tricky to use, as it’s an iPad and I thought it was a bit unnecessary as it was quite heavy around my neck and there were a couple of videos playing in the castle and information panels at various points which sufficed. We also hired the golf cart, but I probably also wouldn’t do that again because we didn’t see much of the garden we couldn’t see from the castle, but it was a bit of fun anyway! - Maëlle GChambery, France1 contributionThe impressive castle of ChambordI visited this castle in April of 2023 during a school trip. It is monumental and impressive! It’s a magnificent castle of Renaissance. It’s so beautiful to see the castle from the road with the path of trees. It’s interesting to see the castle in the movie named “Peau d’Âne” released in 1970 with Catherine Deneuve. It’s the castle of the red royal family. We can see the room of the prince while he is singing his song: “Chanson du Prince”. However, in reality, rooms are empty although some rooms are decorated with painting like Flanders Renaissance tapestries. When you climb to the top you can see the enormous French gardens and the realm which extends to several hectares. I enjoyed my visit, this castle be worth the trip !Chambord thanks you for your visit and your comment. Fascinating buiding with grandious architecture, big park, even forest around belonging to the castle. The first builder Francois I planned this very big Renaissance style hunting lodge for his own recreation but also successfully demonstated the absolute monarch power. It is interesting, for example, that before each visit of the king many servants carried a bunch of necessary things from the royal castle of Blois. Visiting even a part of the castle is a must for tourists. Be prepared to wait in line upon entering the castle for baggage check, even with pre-purchased tickets (we waited at least 40 minutes in August). A golf cart tour around the castle is also enjoyable.Chambord thanks you for your visit and your comment. - Ryan SKeaau, Hawaii376 contributionsRenaissance Ideals Put into StoneThe chateau embodies Renaissance ideals of architecture. It is a living monument to the Renaissance. That is my main take away. The staircase is mind blowing. Many rooms are sorta unfurnished but there's enough to give you a sense of things. Pay attention to layout of the place, as well as the symmetries. Pay attention to the personal crests and logos emblazoned in the stone. I have no special tips, it was all as expected.Chambord thanks you for your visit and your comment. We were blessed with a glorious day, enhancing the charm of our visit. The distinct charm lies in its unfurnished allure, setting it apart from its counterparts. This castle was incredibly interesting, from the double spiral staircase in the center, to the unique layout, to the stunning rooftop. The various exhibits throughout were well-done, especially the section devoted to Chambord’s role in preserving artwork during WWII. We were not given any guide as we entered (unlike every other chateau we visited in the area) and there was no real signage anywhere so it was a bit confusing on where best to start our tour. As per other reviews, a lot of the rooms are empty other than the first floor where clearly a lot of effort has been made.
The biggest disappointment / frustration of our visit was that there was a film crew on site who we had to accommodate rather than vice versa, this prevented us from walking round the gardens as every time we took a step we were told (by a fairly apologetic member of the crew) that we were in the way and would need to move, eventually we just gave up and left.
I appreciate the chateau needs to make money but for us it came at the cost of a full price ticket and feeling constantly on edge that we were in the way. A sign at the entrance explaining that there was a film crew on site with an apology for any inconvenience would have gone a long way.
The chateau itself is spectacular and well worth stopping by to view it but I would give touring the chateau a miss, as others have suggested in their reviews, which is presumably why it’s the only chateau in the area to charge for parking.

Chambord was left as a cherry on a cake of our 3 days Loire tour during which we've visited 8 Chateaus. It was the last we visited due to it's proximity to Paris from where we had our flight back.
I can agree it is the most or second most beautiful one (along with Chenonceau) but only if we're talking about the exterior. The interiors were underwhelming for me - too much of huge empty spaces looking very cold. I understand it's size being I think the second biggest (after Versailles), but almost all others we visited felt much warmer than Chambord. The main attraction is of course the Leonardo's double helix staircase.
The gardens are again huge, covering as I read somewhere a monster size equivalent to Paris ??!! The small part of that we saw is nice, but far from what we saw at Chateau Villandry.
Being very popular the Chateau is literally overpacked with people. That's not good in normal times, let alone during the pandemic. Many visitors don't wear a mask or wear it unproperly and due to such volume it is difficult to control that. Long lines at the ticket booth with no social distance, same inside the castle.
First thing that annoyed me when we arrived was they charge for parking. This was the only Chateau out of 8 we've been that charged for parking, but obviously they can - why missing a chance for huge extra profit on a daily basis for nothing?

Thank you for your visit and your comment.
The castle has many furnished flats, especially on the first floor. The works of art on display are the result of close links with other major museums and châteaux as well as the Mobilier National. Chambord also houses one of the finest collections of tapestries in France. The "out of the ordinary" size of the monument can sometimes give the impression of a small space. For a future visit, we suggest you take a guided tour that will give you the keys to understanding and describing the full symbolic significance of this exceptional architectural creation.
Security guards are present on all floors of the castle to guide visitors and ensure their safety. Audio messages indicating the need to wear a mask are broadcast regularly every day.
See you soon.

Extremely disappointed by the whole place to be honest. Scaffolding around most of the building, gardens fenced off and an overpriced entrance fee of €14 each and €6 parking fee just to look at empty rooms and strategically placed art exhibitions. The best point of the visit was watching the information film at the start of the tour.
In our opinion there are a lot better places to visit with out the crowds better gardens and rooms and free parking.

Hello,
We thank you for your visit and your comment.
We do apologize for the expectations not met. Restoration work is in progress. It will be over beginning spring 2023. We thank you for your understanding.
Car parking fee helps contribute to the maintenance and the conservation of the country park and parking. It also allows to avoid wild parking and so to protect the wild animals living inside the natural reserve. Chambord is one of the few Loire Valley castle allowing free access to its grounds and granting free admission to the chateau to people under 26 year old.

Aftre weeks, months even of confinemant I had a bit of a culture shock arriving in this castle. All of a sudden we were confronted with large crowds, admittedey everyone wears a mask on the premises but in the narrow cooridors it's impossible to keep your social distance form the other visitors. The castke itself is magnificent though and well worth the visit especially the intricate double staircase after an idea of Leonardo da Vinci

Glad you enjoyed your visit to the castle. Thank you for your opinion. Due to the unusual size of the castle, the high number of visitors is rarely felt. However, traffic in certain areas, especially the parade apartments in a row, can sometimes be less fluid during the busiest months. The opening of the formal gardens in 2017, in addition to its great historical and aesthetic interest, has made it possible to offer new circulation spaces and thus distribute the flow. See you soon.

The house was very pretty and the grounds are magnificent. However, there were a ton of people even during covid times which detracts from ambiance. We paid about 15 euro per person and 5 euro to park. You will do alot of walking so be ready. You will also need to be vaccinated or show a pcr test to get admitted. We also hit up the wine house on the way out which has a interesting automatic tasting machine, 3 tastes for 4 euro.

We pre-purchased tickets, but didn’t really need to, as there was barely a queue when we went on a Thursday around the middle of the day in early October.

We visted Chateau de Chambord which is rated the best Chateau in France. Yes it is very grand, however, on a closer examination, I think the operators of Chambord are taking the visitors for granted. Firstly, you have to pay for parking and as far as I can recall, we have never paid for parking on any Chateau visit in France. The next disappointing part of the visit are the Histopads. Once you know a histopad is available, you know that there will be no furniture in any of the rooms and if there is furniture it will be an absolute minimum. If you happen to go to the Royal City of Loches you see that they use Histopads and yes no furniture in the rooms. The staff will most likely tell you at both locations that the Chateaux never had furniture in them because the furniture always moved with the owners, however, this should not be the excuse to do as little as possible to re-create the rooms.
We completed our walk through and to cap off our visit, we like to support the Chateaux shops so we purchased over 100 euros of goods and still had to purchase a bag for the items we purchased! In my opinion, the two Chateaux that the operators of Chambord should go and visit are: 1. Chateau de Chenconceau - all rooms recreated in either original or the same period furniture. The apothecary is amazing! It is superbly run by a private family. 2. Chateau de Chaumont is near Amboise and is another great example of all the rooms containing a mix of original and period items of furniture. The stables are awesome with original saddles and bridles on display. This Chateau is operated by the City of Amboise.

Despite the work that's being done on the chateau at this time (April 2022), the chateau visit was wonderful! Our family selected the audio tour, which was quite informative. It was also pretty easy to take in such a huge place. Our family really appreciated the relaxing environment to relax and eat after our visit with a wide selection of food and drink at reasonable prices and in a terrific setting.

Elodie

I have been on the website trying to get tickets. It indicates that you have to buy them for the day you are coming but does not allow me to choose a date? Is there some trick to this?

Le château ou la visite est-il entierement accessible aux PMR?

I will be bike touring the EuroVelo 6 starting May 2022 and want to stop at the Chateau de Chambord. Is there a secure area to park the bicycle (with panniers loaded on the bike) while I tour the chateau?

Bonjour,
Je voudrais savoir combien de temps il faut compter pour visiter le château et si les chiens sont autorisés.
Merci d'avance à ceux qui pourront me répondre.

Hi, My wife and I will be visiting the chateaux this September on a Friday or Saturday. We will be driving there. Should we get tickets in advance? Is parking an issue? Are crowd's an issue?
Do you recommend the audio tour or tour guide?
Any advice would be helpful?
Thanks,
Bill

Hello Bill,
You will LOVE Chateaux de Chambord! It is massive! Hopefully you or your wife do not have issues with climbing and walking. I would highly recommend the audio guide. (We were fortunate enough to have visited five Chateaus during our stay in France) and if my memory serves me correctly, you are handed a small IPad with the castle grounds on it and when you have actually stepped foot in a certain room or section, the area/room gets highlighted so you wont miss a thing.
As far as getting tickets in advance, my sister and her husband (who reside in France) took care of our tours in advance so I am not sure if they purchased tickets ahead of time.
The grounds are very big and there are places to eat within walking distance once you have parked your car.
If you require any more information, just ask. Enjoy your tour!
