We were blown away by the opportunity to see inside the roof of this amazing chateau there is a viewing platform and because the tiles are off at the moment the complete timber structure is on view - a must!

A lovely small chateau which is undergoing extensive renovation work. We were fascinated to get a view of the work being undertaken to renew the roof quite close up. When combined with a wander around the very pretty village it's a worthwhile half day excursion.

Set in pleasant grounds and looking like a fairy-tale, the chateau is definitely worth a visit---though as is usual with french chateaux, there is not much furniture and not many interior items to ogle! However, it has some rather stunning ceilings, tapestries and fireplaces . Entry fee is not too expensive and it photographs like a dream from the exterior.... More

Glad we saw it 20 years ago! Great chateau! It as being reconstructed (at least part of it) while we were here. Sad, as you don't get the full impact. It is magnificent. 16th century architecture built on an island in the Indre River. Would have been 5 stars other than the scaffolding!

We spent about four hours wandering around using the audio guides and having our packed sandwiches on a bench admiring the view across the moat/river (a previous owner had actually slowed the river down as the reflection was being spoilt by the fast flow - that's a classy water feature!!). Well furnished but as some building works going on at... More

This is a lovely Chateau, now undergoing a major facelift, with as much as 80% of the exterior being replaced. At the moment, you can see the supports for the roof uncovered -- 500 year old joists and beams can be viewed during this process -- a fascinating look at construction. What you can't see is the famous reflection in... More

A delightfully manageable chateau without the scale or pretensions of some of the Loire's other more illustrious castles, but with a wonderful style and charm of its own. There is an authenticity and aesthetic integrity that is truly charming. Its proudest claim to fame is having apparently having hosted Louis XIII for two nights, meh! Enjoy it for what it... More

The fact that the chateau was in scaffolding was a disappointment. The interior is relatively unexceptional. We much preferred Chenonceau and Chambord. We regret no having time to explore the Chateau de Usse which was nearby, but we had run out of time due to the Azay visit. The exterior of the Usse chateau was much more attractive.

I visited the Chateau with my 10 year old daughter. The site was in the middle of a huge renovation project but this didn't impact on our visit. The Chateau (and its grounds) is magical. The rooms are well preserved and we enjoyed reading about the families who had occupied the building in the past. Later in the week we... More
