About
The Basilica and the relics of St. Mary Magdalene have made and continue to make of Vezelay a major spiritual destination. Vezelay has for centuries captured the imagination of people. Not only is the Basilica Church of St. Mary Magdalene a beacon for Christianity, it is also a place of major importance in history and in art history. It has as such recently been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Vezelay was originally a monastic church, which it is now again while remaining a pilgrimage place. It has also been a parish church for some two centuries. The Basilica is a highly praised spiritual and tourist destination for all alike: believers, pilgrims or visitors.

magnificent building! A must visit if you are in the area. It was built in 1000 because so many christiens came to see the relics of St. Marie-Madelene.

Visit of the Basilique altered by the renovation work
Jun 2020
A beautiful scenery over the countryside and the natural parc of Morvan on the large terrace outside the Basilic. However, we were disappointed by the inside of the basilique which is apparently going through renovation. Most of the interesting pieces seem to have been removed except for the crypt where you could still see reliques form Marie-Magdeleine.

worth a visit

Enjoyable days visit, a little touristy, but still worth visiting. la Basilique felt a bit too rebuilt/cleaned, but just my opinion. Some nice shops and galleries.

Beautiful
Nov 2019
Beautiful basilica on top of the hill with magnificient interior. Unfortunately, there was an event when we visited and the cathedral was packed with people.
The surrounding area is also impressive, make sure you walk around the basilica and watch have a look down at the scenery.

Beautiful and luminous
Dec 2019
This basilica dedicated to St Mary Magdalene is a very special sacred place which I always love visiting. The quality of the light here, both visible and invisible, is exceptional. It is lovely to sit quietly in the crypt when there are few visitors, and be enveloped in the peace and silence. It is also lovely to attend a service of monastic prayer (open to everyone), with the beautiful music of the Jerusalem Community. If you visit in the winter wear warm clothes! In the summer it is pleasantly cool inside.

The drive up to Vézelay was lovely.
Oct 2019
Vézelay is a commune in the department of Yonne in the French region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is a hill town famous for Vézelay Abbey. When we visited the basilique it was in the process of being restored. However, we enjoyed the walk up the street through the village and the visit to the basilique. The village and the views of the countryside from the village were beautiful. We visited in October, lovely colors and only a few tourists.

Worth a quick visit
Aug 2019 • Solo
This Basilica or Cathedral type building is all under wraps and scaffolding on the front. It suggest a Notre Dame type experience. In fact inside it is very plain and austere with a Methodist touch to it. Worth a short visit

Beautiful Abbey with lovely grounds
Aug 2019 • Friends
The abbey is absolutely beautiful and very peaceful inside. It is free to enter and the grounds are lovely. There is plenty of shade round the back and the views around the back are breathtaking so well worth finding a shady spot and enjoying. Definitely worth a visit.
