Is the name of the market, as is almost every covered market in France, and this is one of the best we visited during our month through that wonderful country. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, it is a sensory treat, and filled wth so many tasty, delicious choices that you will be hard pressed to limit yourself to just a few items. And the fact that it spills into the connecting streets will make your decisions even more difficult. But be aware - it is only open 3 days a week - Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, 6-14:00. Plan accordingly.

A visit to the Dijon Market was a compulsory recommendation from a friend in Melbourne who travels to Burgundy regularly. How right he was! The Queen Victoria market in Melbourne is a marvellous world class market in the centre of the city. Dijon is not only the equivalent but the adjacent streets with providores and cafés add an extra dimension. One cheese shop had a glass section in the floor so that you could see into the cellar where rounds of cheese could be seen. A similar arrangement was in a wine shop with a cellar which adds to the charm and experience.
But the market itself carries an extraordinary range of fresh produce. However the best thing is you can buy food and consume it with a glass of wine - very French very casual very sophisticated. We bought a dozen oysters ( 6 each of 2 types recommend) and willingly shucked by the fishmonger. In fact the assistant made a small tray from a poly styrene lid and covered with foil in order for us to carry the oysters 5 metres to the tables at the wine kiosk. I ordered 2 glasses of white wine from some bottles on display to be asked was I drinking the wine with the oysters - which I was, to receive a recommendation of an alternative white which would better match the oysters. It was delicious! Next thing the wine vendor brought over 2 small oyster forks and napkins for Madame Merlot and myself. Having finished the oysters went to the stand next door bought some cheese and back to the wine vendor for a glass of recommended Pinot. Just the best lunch! Then a tall white haired man at the wine shop came over and said he would look after the rubbish!
1dozen freshly opened fulsome oyster 11,80 euro, 2 glasses of white 4 euro, 1 glass of burgundy 4 euros, cheese 2 euros = $AUD 30 or roughly $US24.50. You can't find better value for that quality anywhere!
I discovered the next day from a local, the wine shop sells food which I hadn't realised and felt disappointed that I had not considered their food. The white haired man who spoke English and offered to look after the rubbish was in fact the ownerBoth were gracious and obliging.
The market itself operates it's biggest day on Fridays (7am to about1.30pm), if you chose to go Friday you can go to the Saturday market (smaller) on Sat. The train between Beaune and Dijon runs regularly with the trip approx 30 mins. The train stations in each town are an easy walk to each respective market.

Unlike Lyon's Les Halles, where I just went to before Dijon, this one is a real market for the locals. The one in Lyon carries mostly very upscale, expensive items, which I do not expect the locals to be purchasing for their daily consumption.
There's even a long lineup for one of the butcher shops, and no patrons at another just a couple dozen yards from it. Meat of exotic nature, cheeses, fruit, veggies, seafood, too numerous to mention, so I have attached quite a few photos, seeing that there are only 11 travelers' photo on this review topic.
Outside the market in the surrounding streets are vendors , selling more veggies and fruit, clothing, and even mattresses!

The market is a typical French market with all the usual foods for sale. We had the horrible experience of being robbed here, and I must put my hand up and say that foolishly I did not zip up my bag which contained my wallet because it seems like a safe place. I was totally unaware of it happening, a man bumped me and said sorry, I guess that is when his accomplice swiped my wallet, which contained credit cards, drivers licence etc and a little cash. Spent the rest of the day cancelling the cards via cell phone to back in New Zealand, and making reports with the Gendarmes, who really did not care, and said it is a regular event. You have to wonder why there are no warning signs at the market! I am telling this painful story so other travellers will be more careful than I was, and not have their holiday ruined! I could have so easily prevented this crime by being more careful.

If you want to understand how the French care about food, visit this market and you will start to see why French cuisine is truly remarkable. The number and quality of the market stands is amazing. We traversed many booths with Alex Miles during his cooking class (see I-Food-France reviews). The knowledgeable person knows who has the best pork, the best beef, the best cheese, etc and you will find the best of everything here in Dijon. The outside stalls are really fun as well, presenting all manner of wares. There were 2 top attractions in Dijon for us - The Dukes Palace and this Market.

I just love this market ! Friday is the best day (the market is open on Saturday and Tuesday mornings too)
It is bustling around and inside this beautiful building on a Friday.Farmers sell everything you can think of as far as fruit and vegetables go,as well as flowers & plants.Inside are cheeses, meats, fish and so reasonably priced! The bistros around the market are packed!
We are staying 12 days this time, especially to be able to visit the market on 2 Fridays!

Visited these local markets and after reading reviews on TripAdvisor was expecting a great morning. Spent about 1 hour walking around the markets they were OK. Yes lots of locals use these markets to purchase fruit, vegetables, meats, seafood and cheese however this market is similar to markets you find in other places. A reasonable amount of cafes and restaurants surround the restaurant however these are not exclusive to the markets and are open at other times. You do need to have a resonable amount of French to be able to interact and ask questions appropriately. No samples appeared to be available during this visit. There was one lolly store, one spice stall and one Asian food stall. A few stalls were closed. If you are in Dijon it's something to do, personally I would not travel here for the sole purpose of visiting the market.

A huge variety of everything to do with food, plus some nice cafes and restaurants around the market. The variety and freshness of the produce were tantalizing!
The building itself was designed by M. Gustave Eiffel
Also around the market you will find stalls selling all kinds of everything -- old books, CDs, shoes, clothes etc on market days.
Might be a nice idea to buy your food here and enjoy a picnic at Pl. Darcy!

Thanks to several reviews by TA contributors in May, especially VinMerlot, we decided to visit Dijon and to experience the Market. As recommended, we attended on a Friday, Saturday too! Fresh produce, excellent cheeses, a huge variety of fish and meets, friendly people and reasonable prices! We took advantaged of the previously described oyster/wine bar and purchased some cheese and bread to go. On Friday the streets around the market were filled with private tables selling a huge variety of second hand items.
Our experience was enough to give us a "taste of Dijon", enough to know we will return for 3 or 4 days and stay in a place that will allow us to use the market and to cook our own food. I highly recommend this location and all of the other activities available in and near Dijon.

didn't see any.... this is mainly a fresh food market where locals shop (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish...), nice "buvette" snack&drink place in the market where you can make a pit stop and enjoy oysters, ham (bought at the food stalls).

Most probably based on my planning, I will be stopping in Dijon on Sunday late morning, so I'm just wondering will there be any shops / vendors open on that particular day? Otherwise, it's going to be a waste that I need to give it a miss....

Any good open market in Dijon open on Sunday or Monday, end of May? Also, is there somewhere I can buy or eat on the spot fresh French oysters? Thanks.

Mary O, do you know what time the market opens on Tuesday? We have a tour scheduled that day and would like to get to the market prior to leaving. Thanks for any information you might have!
