What a fantastic trip we just experienced. The Grand Victoria is an elegant vessel that went down the canals of France to Burgundy country. Accommodations were outstanding and first class service. The food was remarkably good and presented beautifully . Beyond the personal relationship that the crew had with us we came away having learned so much about really good wine. The Classic Burgundy Wine Tour was truly a game changer. The first day was wine tasting at the famous Chateau de Pommard, on to a tour of the historic city of Beaune, a visit to Chateau deRully and Chateau d Cloys de Vougeot. Our last tour day was a walking tour of Dijon's marketplace. This was not only educational but crazy fun. What memories we made. Kudos to Edward and Cindy and their fine staff.

Our cruise on Grand Victoria exceeded our already high expectations in every respect! Edward, Cindy and the entire crew couldn't have been any more welcoming and gracious. Everything about the boat was perfectly thought out and designed from the guestrooms to the interior spaces to the exterior spaces. We loved every meal we had for the week and the wine pairings with dinner each night were great. The itinerary for the week was also perfectly thought through. We had just the right amount of time cruising, touring, relaxing and also getting some exercise in. The knowledge we gained on Burgundy wine and the region in general from Edward's expertise was fantastic. I can't recommend this trip highly enough!

My wife and I joined two other couples for a fabulous week on the Grand Victoria. As so many others have written, the level of care, luxury, beauty, attention to detail, and comfort are just remarkable. Edward is more than the captain, he is a joy to be with all day. Not only is he always ready to share his extensive knowledge of Burgundy wines, but as a guide on excursions he offers insight into local history, acts as a translator and advisor for bistrot menus, shares shopping hints at his favorite cheese shops, and so much more. Cindy is a delight, always ready to help and advise, happy to talk about music, movies, food and wine, or just your plans for the day. She also makes sure that everything runs smoothly throughout the day. The crew was ever friendly and always attentive. Cindy’s son Alex, Suzanne & Phoe (“Fi”) and chef Jordan genuinely like and appreciate each other and work as a team to pamper their guests.

All six of us agreed throughout the week and at the end of our trip that everything exceeded our highest expectations, from the beautiful flowers to the gourmet dining, from the wine choices to the very comfortable rooms, from the unexpected laundry service to the hot tub and happy hours, from the enjoyable excursions to the level of attention and luxury. I only wish we could give this trip more than five stars and enthusiastically recommended that anyone reading this review book a trip on the Grand Victoria.

Now a few quick responses to comments made by others to which I disagree strongly.
(1) Whoever complained about Cindy must have been the source of their problems. Cindy is a wonderful, sweet, fun, humorous, enthusiastic person. By the end of the week the six of us all thought of Cindy and Edward as friends. She works hard but is always ready to take care of her guests. To say otherwise is just wrong.
(2) It is crazy to denigrate Edward’s nightly wine selections. It was clear that each one was well thought out and chosen to enhance that night’s dinner. Also, if you ever want more than one bottle each of white and red wine, all you have to do is ask! They will gladly open another bottle.
(3) We asked to change the itinerary for one day, bypassing Dijon (because our group had already spent three days there) to spend some time instead in Dole. This caused no problem at all, Edward proved to be a knowledgeable host in Dole, and at our request he joined us for lunch at a canal-side bistrot, where he explained some of the local specialties on the menu. They are of course restricted by their mooring schedules, but except for that seemed totally flexible.
(4) Our crew was wonderful, but it is a difficult job, with maybe up to 24 or more straight weeks of cruises. So perhaps with the exception of son Alex, it is probably not unusual for crews to change annually or even more often. Apparently chefs are in such high demand that they will quit in the middle of a weekly cruise. But you can count on the steady guidance of Edward, Cindy and Alex to keep things running smoothly from week to week. And if you are lucky, you will get the same crew we had. Chef Jordan’s first day was our first day, and he was excellent.
(5) We wanted to be generous with our gratuity to the crew to thank them for a great job, and have no idea how the money is allocated. However, since Edward and Cindy ended up taking on more than their usual responsibilities, why wouldn’t it be fair for them to share in some of the tip? That may not have happened but if it did, nobody should object. I feel confident that everyone was treated more than fairly.

Finally, here is a tip for you. After looking around at various barge cruises, if you choose the Grand Victoria (and why wouldn’t you?), don’t go through a broker. Along with taking a fee of 25% or so, our broker (who is nice) provided little in the way of answering questions or providing insight. Instead, just book directly through the Grand Victoria web site, which benefits the boat, and write to Cindy directly. Remember how helpful she can be? She will respond quickly with a complete answer to any and all questions. I wish our group had known that from the start.

If you decide to take a week long trip on the Grand Victoria with Edward and Cindy, you will love it. I promise.

A wonderful week on the Grand Victoria! A staff of six attended to all our needs and even anticipated our needs before we knew them! Kind, helpful, knowledgeable, and so hospitable! Can’t recommend high enough!!
A terrific mix of excursions, relaxation, education, wine galore, and a five star experience! Rooms were spacious and always attended to, boat was extra large and great outdoor seating plus a jacuzzi with champagne was incredible! We were spoiled!

First let's start with the boat itself. It was refurbished several years ago and the cabins and cabin bathrooms are large by cruise standards and very well appointed. The indoor living room/bar/dining area is well appointed and kept very clean by the staff. There is, also, a nice outdoor area for sitting or dining and bicycles for use by guests. The cruise is very smooth so you do not have to worry at all about being seasick.
The food is very good, but the chef rotates each summer. Portions are measured out, so do not expect seconds. The wine is village and Premier Cru, except for the last night which is Grand Cru from lesser known producers and off years. If you like wine you will find the selections good. If you are a real burgundy aficionado, you will only find them adequate. One bottle of white and one bottle of red are poured each evening. There are no seconds. There is a jar of macarons (not replenished during the cruise) , and a dish of nougats and mints (replenished daily). The open bar is well stocked with premium liquor and soft drinks.
Alec, the deck hand is the son of the owners, and is very helpful lifting umbrellas, bicycles and other equipment. Chloe, the chef, can accommodate most requests (vegetarian etc), if she knows in advance, and Fi keeps the cabins very clean. Laundry is done once per cabin during the cruise. Stephanie is the hostess who serves you at meal times and is extremely friendly. Our sense was that the crew and owners do not get along very well, which is why the crew changes every season. Tipping is an additional 7-10% of the price of the cruise and is divided equally amongst the staff including the owners, which I find ridiculous - they should not partake.
So why was this not 5 star? The answer is the attitude of the owners Ed and Cindy. They should not be in the hospitality business. The price is about $45,000 for a week (really 5 days as you board at 500pm on day one and disembark at 900am on day 7), so luxury comes at a premium. If you ask for a special visit to a city or winery, they accommodate, reluctantly, and let you know repeated that they have done you a favor. They do not join you for dinner on the first or last night and host a captain's table, but instead really try to avoid interacting with the gusts. Ed has a wealth of knowledge of the region, and when asked, he will share his knowledge. Cindy seems to have avoided learning about the region, avoided learning French and gives the impression that this is a business and she could be doing almost anything else. In the end, there should be a spirit of graciousness and friendliness, and the itinerary should be modified as needed for the guests who are spending a fortune, and know what makes them happy. Food should be abundant and the wine should flow, generously. I wish we had chosen a less luxurious boat, but one that had a more joyous ambience.

We are a group of six, three couples. We love wine and get along very well when we travel together. We sought out the Grand Victoria as a way to immerse ourselves in Burgundy, and we wanted to avoid crowds, yet still have a high-class adventure.

Overall, this trip is as good as advertised. The ship is really well kept. Alex, the owners' son, works hard to keep every inch of it spotless. He is polite and kind, and offers help. The ship itself is really well planned out. The rooms are spacious (for a boat) and the bathrooms are up-to-date, with good showers and elbow-room for two.
The boat is quiet, and you will not feel any discomfort if you're concerned about being on the water. The main indoor area is basically a dining and lounge area. The bar is stocked with good stuff, and various fizzy drinks to refresh. The seating area is a great place to review the day or hang out with coffee and read a book. There is a sunny table and chairs out on the deck. This area was really nice after Alex put up an umbrella for us. Some of us used the bikes...we liked riding on the path that goes along the entire length of the canal.

The crew is great. Stephanie was our main resource in the dining and lounge areas. She smiled, was quick to offer help, and made us feel at-home. In the background, Phoe ('fee') took care of our state rooms, etc. We had our laundry done and it came back neatly folded. Our chef was Chloe, who created a menu that easily compared to the cuisine we had in Paris prior to boarding the GV. Save room for dessert!

Cindy and Ed own the boat. We want to rave about Ed. He is really worldly, multilingual, very cultured, and very resourceful. He has created a well-thought-out itinerary that you should probably stick to, as he is great when in his groove. He enjoys telling the history of Burgundy, interlaced with thorough discussions about the wines and vineyards of the region. He will drive you to interesting places and give you advice in the various towns that you will visit. At night they dressed up and welcomed us to the wines of the night. These were all high - quality, and paired with the meals.

We need to mention that Cindy was not as welcoming as the other reviews indicate. Without any apparent reason, she was from the very start and until the last moment, unaccommodating, standoffish, unapproachable, lacking in the hospitable graces essential to making guests feel welcome and comfortable. Frankly she made us feel unwelcome on the ship. We still do not know why, but as the guests, we really shouldn't have to feel this way. Hopefully this comment will make your experience five-star.

We have been asked about this trip by many friends and colleagues (we are all professionals in the USA). We had a great time and if you are looking into a river/canal-boat experience you should consider the Grand Victoria for your getaway next summer.

My wife and I just completed a trip on the Grand Victoria and it exceeded every expectation. From the moment we boarded and were greeted by Cindy, she and Edward, our hosts(aka the “Admiral” and the “Captain,” in that order)
were warm and attentive to our every need. The crew, Alex and Stephanie, were equally warm, helpful and attentive, and Chloe, our chef extraordinaire, continuously exceeded the prior night’s dinner earning lots of oos and ahs.

Every day there was a side trip led by the ever-knowledgeable Edward, who is a font of knowledge, coupled with a great sense of humor.

Space is limited on a barge but in spite of that our cabin was comfortable and the bathroom was modern and luxurious, and both were well-appointed.

Mornings on deck were a delight as was the opportunity to have breakfast and lunch under a tent on deck.

Even tho there were lots of things to do daily, it was as equally delightful to just sit and watch the world pass by while cruising.

And last but not least was Angus, the resident pooch, who was a source of great amusement throughout the trip.

All in all at the very top of our travel experiences, be it in the US or abroad. A trip not to be missed.

Edward, Cindy and the exceptionally attentive crew they have assembled create the perfect balance of decadent luxury and education about Burgundy culture, history and wine. The outfitting of the barge is only outdone by the artistic flair and delicious dishes created each day by chef Chloe. In addition to each day’s culinary treats, Steph and Cindy pampered and spoiled us while Edward and Alex ensured we were safe and and our environment was meticulously cared for. Nothing but the highest marks for the Grand Victoria French Barge Vacations.

The Grand Victoria Cruise was one of the best vacations we had with several of our friends. Edward and Cindy go out of their way to ensure you have a great time. The accommodations are large staterooms and on par with luxury hotels. The food Chef Tom presented was outstanding and Edward paired the wine with the food superbly. The day trips they planned gave you a chance to see the countryside and local venues. All in all, this is a luxury experience you do not want to miss.
