This gate can be mistaken for a triumphal arch from the time of the Napoleonic Empire. That would be logical... but wrong. Porte Guillaume was part of the fortress wall of Dijon, which was completely demolished and we can only imagine it. However, it still existed in 1788, when the gate was built by the architect Jean-Philippe Maret. The gate was named after the governor of Burgundy, Conde. True, all this Conde, along with the Bourbons, came to an end a year later when the Parisians stormed the Bastille. The gate was renamed the Freedom Gate. Now it`s named after the reformer of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Bénigne Guillaume de Volpiano. To be honest, this gate at Place Darcy is not particularly interesting, but it has a great symbolic meaning for Dijon. All political demonstrations either start here or end here.

Right by the main tram area, if you come in from the outer reaches of the city, this is one of the first things you see.

It's an introduction. An insight. A glympse. Of what you are about to see as you walk in to explore this medieval city.

Once an entrance through the walls of the old, now the entrance to a fantastic pedestrian walkway that extends for many blocks. Admire the carvings which grace the structure and marvel at the length of time this has been standing.

If you catch the tram into Dijon centre, this is the first striking piece of architecture that you'll see welcoming you to the main shopping area of Dijon.

This is a very interesting place and the monument is impressive. There is a plaque on it that honors Thomas Jefferson.

Originally part of the city wall, but now free standing. Nice monument in the middel of a bit of a square next to the Jadin Dracy

It is a Renaissance arch at the entrance of the city as you walk from the Gare into the old town. It is big and noble and there are great cafes and a movie theater around it.

It is a good place to meet as it is easy to get to and most people that you ask can tell you where it is. There were musicians playing beneath it on one of the days I was there. It's really pretty at night time.
