This was my first time in Rennes and I am very delighted with Brittany's capital. It has it all, like Paris on a smaller scale, but not that hectic and stressful.
The city center is very picturesque, with cute little squares, half timbered houses, interesting shops,...etc. There're two beautiful Cathedrals, as well a terrific Thabor parc right in the center. Really a nice city to visit.

The historic center of Rennes is the part of the city that includes the cathedral and small adjacent streets. Beautiful streets with wooden and stone buildings in medieval style. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops. It is the most beautiful part of the city

Beautiful architecture varied with old and modern kept impeccably clean by the council . Vibrant with a lot of well behaved youth from the Colleges.

Just a short stretch of buildings. Nice to see how the old structures were. We didn’t get to step inside any of the shops though.

Stayed here 4 nights on an independent tour of the area. We wanted to see how the real people of France lived and I think we got a good glimpse of it staying in a little 1 bedroom apartment in the old town just 150 metres from the railway station. Bought our groceries from the local supermarket and roamed for hours. Great architecture from middle ages up late 1800's and also quite different as you get closer to the coast and see the influence of the British style architecture. Hundreds of little cafes and restaurants and buildings of interest, from the Opera house to cathedrals and council buildings. Good to just wander, sit and take in the atmosphere. Take a train to St Marlo or hire a car for the day and see more of the coast. Visit the Abbey of Mont St Michelle on day trip. A great experience for the independent traveler and so much to keep you occupied.

First thing: stop at the Tourist office and get a map! I wish we had. We wandered into and through the small cobbled streets, enjoyed the wood timbered buildings and the atmosphere. Many buildings have cafes, bars and small shops so window shopping is a pleasure as is trying to decide where you'd like to eat! The historical center is a very walkable area, although it is not vehicle free and sometimes you have to give way to the traffic. The cobble stones add to the atmosphere but are not level so a baby stroller with narrow wheels is a chore. Get map so you get some history and can find your way back to a particular spot if you want to. Lovely way to spend a day.

Rennes is quite walkable and accessible. Its appealing scale and gorgeous regional architecture kept us interested as we wandered, photographed, and watched the locals.
