Beautiful Museum!!! A gem in the French countryside

After traveling around european cities, it was refreshing to walk around the beautiful French countryside at Ecomusee Du Pays de Rennes. Our Taxi driver gave us a strange look at why we would want to be dropped off here, but us four girls wanted to see this museum and its gorgeous Froment Du Leon cows. We were not disappointed. Do take a picnic and plenty of water. We walked along paths and admired the well kept grounds, gardens and livestock. The staff were amazing!!! Very kind and welcoming. Unfortunately we don't speak any French but that didn't stop Jean-Paul from giving us an excellent tour, letting us hold a baby lamb, and arranging for us to meet Thierry, a herd owner of the beautiful cows. We had a wonderful time with Thierry and thank Him Immensely for his hospitality, kindness, and letting us see his herd.
Pretty much all the museum descriptions are in French but they also have nice pictures and displays to look at. Well worth your time if your in Rennes. A wonderful Museum, we loved it. Thank You so much!!!!

Take a drink with you!

This is an interesting, well-designed, up to date museum, specialising in the rural history of the Ille et Vilaine region.

For those visiting for the first time the following may be helpful.

Visiting by public transport is easy – take the Metro to Le Triangle station and walk the rest of the way – directions on the Museum website are clear. The walk is flat and easy but be aware that it will take you 20 minutes, so probably not a good idea with young children or those with limited mobility, or in the rain!

The museum has a small pamphlet in English, but unlike many
of the other Rennes attractions the signage at the museum is all in French. (At the Museum de Bretagne for example everything is in French, English and Bretagne). We found the signage language quite difficult to understand and our French is not bad! This was a shame because the exhibits are beautifully displayed and we were interested in the content.

There was a fascinating display of early forms of cereal crops for example showing how straw had been shortened over the years by selective breeding….but as you can imagine, the vocabulary for that is not easy unless your French is quite good!

The outside areas with crops, cows, horses, sheep etc are nice for anyone with an interest in the subject and would probably be fun for younger children too.

A major disappointment/inconvenience is the lack of refreshments. The museum is quite a way out of town and seemingly in a café desert. There are no refreshments on site and we were told that there was nothing within walking distance either.

My suggestion would be to bring a picnic or at least a drink with you. It could easily take a couple of hours to walk around and we faded before the end simply because we needed a cup of tea!

Relatively unknown attraction in Rennes. It is a sort of model farm, including a museum. Old farm house is lovely to walk around. Went in spring when there were lots of baby animals, could pet lambs and baby goats. Mostly outside so definitely go on a good day! No food available to purchase there so bring a picnic. I walked from the nearest metro stop (Triangle I think) which took about 20 minutes, although there is a bus stop closer. Parking available. Great family day out.
