About
Only a few rare cities’ names are linked to an art or a passion. Quimper has the luck to be one of them. Associated with earthenware for over 300 years, today Quimper has a museum worthy of this great artisan and industrial tradition. The earthenware museum will give you the opportunity of an enriching trip through the centuries. The exhibition of 500 pieces exposed, some of which are unique, is regularly renewed, thanks to a collection of 2000 works whether religious, historical, scenes of daily life or abstract drawings, all fixed in this noble and beautiful material. Your visit will lead you to understand the entire manufacturing process, the different methods and stages of production. Then, you will dive into the birth and evolution of the Quimper style but also in the history of the different factories that monopolized the activity of Locmaria district. This tour will take you between Marseille, Nevers, Rouen to the bank of Odet.

I don't like ceramics exactly. But I do like history. And it seems ceramics has been there every step of the way. And is one of the few artifacts that survives over time. This museum in Quimper was a nice surprise, offering detailed history of the faience world in France along with a step-by-step rundown on how ceramics are made. And of course, at the end, a well-stocked museum shop. The only downsides: this stuff is expensive, so be prepared. And our particular guide was not always forthcoming with information. But was ready to answer specific questions.

There are big museums and little ones. They succeed when they thoughtfully connect with their audience. With some 300 years of ceramic art produced and evolved in three prime factories in Quimper, it is fitting that a museum brings together some fine examples of the talent, artistry and Breton culture captured in their pottery.

The displays are beautifully lit; there are some, not all of the liner notes in English, and it is big enough to show the breadth of design without becoming tedious. We especially enjoyed the temporary exhibit on Breton costumes, a cultural feature that has inspired many of the designs.

Some negative comments have had to do with the limited hours in which the museum is open. Clearly, someone would be disappointed to have wanted to visit the museum and missing it. If you do get to experience it, you will not be disappointed.

Small but full of excellent examples of 18th and 19th C French faience, the museum is a must for anyone who has an interest in the pottery of Quimper.

The collection ranges from the early manufacture of terra cotta-colored bottles to the finest production of Porquier-Beau. The two floors display geometric, grotesque, figural, botanical and the whimsical. It's all there!

We did the combined tour of the workshop and the museum. Our two year old loved it and so did we.

The pottery on display is beautiful with a real range of work on display.

All the staff were helpful and one even ran after us to return our triceratops!

Thank you!

I personally called the Museum when I was planning my trip to Quimper back in July of 2016 to make sure they would be open in October/November. That wasn't the case when I got there. I was really disappointed as I had built this stop as the crux of my stop in Quimper. Luckily the Henriot shop was open, the best part of my visit to Quimper!

We stumbled upon this delightful little museum after walking along the river path towards the centre of Quimper. It is clean, modern and well laid out. It tells the history of the earthenware industry in Quimper. The display cases contain a huge range of examples arranged chronologically. There was a guide in English available and most exhibits had labels in both French and English.

On a walk from our campsite along the river Odet into Quimper we stumbled upon this delightful museum. We were warmly greeted at the entrance and for a modest fee of 4.50€ we enjoyed a great exhibition of pottery and the history of Pottery in Quimper. There was an information sheet in English and, unlike many of the museums I had previously visited in Brittany, some of the displays had English as well as French information panels.

The pottery on display was truly beautiful, varied and interesting.

If you like pottery, or even art, this is definitely a must do in Quimper.

Admittedly I should have checked on their website but disappointed to walk from the centre of town to find it was shut. I think a number of visitors had made the same mistake and were found in the nearby gift shop making purchases. Really do think they should open on a Sunday .

This museum is next door to the one remaining manufacturer of Quimper pottery with its charming motifs. The museum is well laid out and has a vast range of pieces.
