If the answer is yes, the museum offers a nice journey into Breton art between Roman times and the 20th century. Excellent costume section. Very nice building (archbishopric) where the museum is located with a spiral staircase that culminates with a beautiful wooden roof

Backing onto the cathedral, the former palace of the bishops of Cornouaille, which dates from the 16th century, houses the Breton departmental museum. Breton history and culture since prehistory are in the spotlight in the permanent collections. Magnificent prehistoric gold jewelry, stained glass windows, sacred statues, costumes, facade sculptures, furniture, earthenware and sandstone.

In the heart of the city center, this museum is a must. the permanent exhibition Guides us through the eras, then the Breton costumes illustrate the know-how. And at the apex of a superb stone staircase, we contemplate a sumptuous carved framework. What nice surprises!

High quality rather than quantity offerings. Nice range from bronze age to today. Good mix of faience pottery and furniture, on top of the usual statues and coins. I would have liked more elaborate explanation of many of the items - too brief and lacking in context. The room with traditional dress is great - just spend time enjoying the detail.

This is a gem of a museum. Small, focused on Brittany, it takes you from prehistoric to recent history in grand fashion.

Located in a former bishop's palace and next to the cathedral, this fantastic museum showcases Breton history, archaeology, furniture, traditional costumes, and a great poster exhibit. You are presented with an organized and interesting telling of the history of this region, magnificently displayed with professional staging and lighting, and in a manner that is not overwhelming. If you have time for just one museum in Quimper, make it this one!

The museum is set in the ancient bishop's palace near to the cathedral. The building itself is fascinating, including a beautiful Renaissance tower and staircase dating from 1507. Inside are displays from pre-historic and Roman times, the Middle Ages and more, up to the present day. Artifacts on display include costumes, jewellery, coins, pottery, art and furniture.

We arrived at the museum just before lunchtime, and we were sold tickets, then politely told of the closure over lunchtime, but that we could resume our visit afterwards. All very Gallic, sensible and in line with the lifestyle they value, and which we came to like too!
Sure enough, we were able to continue our visit after lunch and an excellent experience it proved to be! We had been lamenting the lack of Bretonese history we had found so far, but many well put together exhibits, annotated in French, Breton and English soon remedied that! The prehistory aspect and the Roman era was well treated, as was later history. There was a beautiful exhibit of folk costumes - so well kept and presented! We loved the whole museum, and would recommend anyone visit it if in Quimper. Entrance fee I do not remember as being very expensive.

If you only have time to visit one Museum in Quimper you must go here. It is in a beautiful building next to the Cathedral which used to be the Bishop's Palace. It has been beautifully and tastefully restored. The contents are quite amazing. In an early room is a beautiful gold tork wonderfully restored. We were quite bolded over and spent far longer here than anticipated. Other attraction were far less interesting.

A treasure of a museum! Thoughtful, well laid out and well lit with appropriate examples of each archaeological period with good descriptions in Breton,English and French. It leads from the ground floor ancient and medieval history and archaeology up to the cultural museum concerned with Breton history. Usually these costume and culture museums in all countries are pretty terrible, but this one is superb. It has amazing examples of art, furniture and costumes relating to the fascinating history of Brittany, and there was a beautiful photographic and poster exhibition projected onto a wall in a separate room. The art and photos gave a moving history of the hardship and courage of this farming and seafaring community and I had a strong sense of the Breton history after leaving. The choice of material displayed tells a coherent story and does not overwhelm the visitor, and this is the mark of a great museum.
