We went to see the Alphonse Mucha exhibition (closes 18 September)

It was an interesting perspective on Mucha - we had first seen his art and activities in the Walkere Art gallery in Liverpool and that concentrated on his development as a poster artist in France and Czechoslovakia.

The exhibition in Quinper concentrated more on the Paris and Brittany activities - entirely reasonable and showed more of his commercial activities with designs on e.g. perfume bottles and biscuit tins as well as the glamour posters of Sarah Bernhardt.

I thought it was quite crowded and not very well lit. But very enjoyable nonetheless

The exhibition is at the musée départemental breton. We hoped you hade time to see Henry Moret in our museum of fine arts!

A very good collection is hosted by the museum of Quimper, the prefecture of the Finistere Department. Not just emphasizing the art of Bretagne, but also a broad collection of works from the Low Countries, Italy and of course the rest of France.

The building itself seems to have received a large makeover recently. Friendly staff.

Thanks for your glad return. The building looks nice but the wonderful makeover was made in 1993. Almost 30 years !

France has many excellent provincial art galleries - and this is one of the best. Permanent collection includes Pont Aven artists, Breton artists from 19th century and Sevres porcelain.

The current exhibition of Dufy has a focus on his textile printing works (woodcuts on silk) - very enjoyable, even if you're not a fan of his paintings

Highly recommended

As a holiday home owner and resident of the Cornouille region, I often go to this museum. The permanent collect is excellent for theBreton art and culture (it's not far from the Departmental museum which focuses on Breton hisotry and culture). The exhibitions rotate and are more international. The last one was on Raoul Dufy. Absolutely marvelous!

Very well worthwhile visiting especially as a particularly wet day. Well worth the visit, seeing a number of unknown artists work made it more interesting

Interesting mix of 16th century and later works, this museum really shines when it focuses on its local artists of the 19th century and later.

People’s view of art and interpretation of it is various. I enjoyed my wonder around the paintings 🖼 stopping to look at one longer than others. It’s well worth the visit and the staff are lovely and helpful and friendly.

We visited the museum just to see the impressionist exhibition (also housed in the nearby Breton Museum) because we had already visited the museum itself last year also during a rainy day (so this is definitely a good rainy day activity). There is one ticket for both museums for this exhibition, also once you have purchased your ticket, you do not need to stand in line again (but this is not indicated anywhere, so just brave the stares on those in line in waiting to buy a ticket if you have your ticket already and go to the entry point).
The paintings themselves are in dedicated rooms and easy to find in the Fine Arts Museum, but in the Breton Museum you have to go on a kind of wild goose chase to finally get to the Impressionist paintings. The selection is, as it says, the last Impressionists. So not the usual Impressionist paintings you might be used to seeing. I liked reading the biographies of the painters in the museum hall.

The charm of Quimper itself seeps into the museum of fine arts. For a relatively small museum there are some fascinating works here, including a number by Gauguin and his associates of the Pont Aven school. Like any art museum, not everything was to my taste, but there were some wonderful works, particularly in the temporary exhibition about the last impressionists.
The ticket also gives access to another museum in the former bishop's palace nearby which also has part of the last impressionists exhibition alongside historical artifacts and local costumes
Between the two museums are a number of nice restaurants where local produce can be enjoyed in the open air while people watching over the square.
