unexpected and delightful

We visited Concarneau last year but somehow missed a visit to the Ville Close. It was certainly worth going back. A perfect medieaval walled city, rather like a castle precinct, but with places to shop and eat or just sit. A little gem and just right for a stroll after browsing the busy market. A second visit is planned.

A bit disappointing
Sep 2020
The walled island town has some charm but that comes from its location and walls, but the houses in it are rather plain and whereas a town like this in the USA or England would be full of fudge shops, this one is full of icecream shops. I do not recommend paying to walk on the walls.

beautiful place, but can become pretty crowded

a visit is worthwhile, but make sure to go there early since the place is small and can become jammed with visitors

Charant, mais trop touristique/ Charming but too touristic
Jul 2020
Architecturally and historycally very interesting, a main shop street very animated with lots of shops and restaurants, at least in the summer season, too touristic even. Luckily, there are still some quiet areas left. Park at the parking in front of the Tourism office, just in front of the "closed city". "Closed city" absolutely charming but too touristic to my taste then.

Beautiful area
Sep 2019
Concarneau is regarded as France’s third most important fishing port. Jutting out into the port and circled by medieval walls, is Ville Close with only a few narrow streets. It is known now as the Blue City because the fisherman used blue fishing nets and hung them on their houses to dry. It is only 400 meters by 100 meters in length and width. There were three drawbridges to get into it, and it was very fortified. The streets are filled with shops and restaurants, where you can see geraniums tumbling from window boxes. Really nice area to stroll around-worth a visit!

Lovely to stroll, shop and have a gallette or crepe served with locally brewed beers. Lovely views over the sea.

Impressive middle age fortified closed city with typical old houses, narrow street, by night it is more impressive ... listen to the roaming of smoking guns ...

Well worth a visit especially when the live music group is performing
Sep 2019
This is a lovely, atmospheric place to visit, especially when the mediaeval group is performing just inside the entrance. There are many shops and restaurants to visit or you can just enjoy people watching on a bench in the sun.

Fabulous walled town
Sep 2019
We spend a wonderful day exploring the walls, shops and great places to eat. It is free to access the main tower and there are exhibitions which change on a regular basis. Highly recommended!
