About
Explore the museum! Brest’s Museum of Fine Arts Founded in post-war France, the museum of fine arts houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures and graphic arts (drawings and prints)... readily associated with the city’s maritime tradition. Since its opening in 1968, it has continued to enrich its collections and now presents a visit itinerary that showcases seascapes, history painting, the Symbolist movement, the Pont-Aven School and the Nabis. The collections are displayed in themed galleries. The museum also runs: themed tours, children’s workshops, performances, storytelling, films, music and much more! A place of discovery and sharing for all the family! Temporary exhibitions are held two or three times a year, punctuating the life of the museum.

Small and unimaginately designed.

Loved the external features of the building but just 2 rectangular galleries inside - some nice stuff eg Bonnard but not very exciting . Pity there were not more galleries open. Quite liked the little photography section .

Eclectic collection, nice atmosphere

The museum has a very varied collection of works, ranging in quality. No special highlights, although the sea-related works and Brest-related painting in my view were the nicest. The atmosphere of the museum is very nice and relaxed, though. There is a good kids corner, where they can colour and copy paintings.

Small and rather dull
Sep 2017 • Solo
Opens as is usual with French museums at a rather tardy 10am. €5 entrance fee for an adult.
Apart from some decent naval and maritime pieces there was little of merit. Their temporary exhibits were composed of the usual meaningless abstract garbage which neither expressed new concepts nor old methods to any degree.

Only worth a visit if you have exhausted all other activities in the area.

Remarkable collection

Not the biggest Art collection I have visited but a very worthwhile diversion. Not easy to find as it is off the main radial streets and not easily visible, but worth the trouble.

1st floor comprises a single room - large, light and airy - the 4 walls of which are adorned with some impressive oil paintings mainly from C17th and C18th divided according to subject. Unlike some galleries the works are not hidden behind glass or other high security measures but simply hung to be admired from any distance. I have never been so close to a Canaletto, and will probably never be so again.

Ground floor contains a series of divisions as one moves through the centuries to the late C20th.

At 5€ this is very good value for a couple of hours of peaceful appreciation.

We had about an hour to kill with small kids and this was great, can say the kids loved it but we didn't stay long, a nice mix, and interesting historical section of the local bridge.

This is a very small museum, but there are a few pieces in the permanent collection that are worth seeing, Gauguin's friends are present, Paul Serurier, Emile Bernard, Lacombe "the scuplting Naby" ... A quick visit to the craddle of the "fauvisme"

Small, not too exciting.

I suppose with the Louvre and other world famous museums within such close proximity, not much to be expected here. First Sunday of each month there is no entrance fee. There are special exhibits on display upstairs, which when I was there was Italian Renaissance. Can easily complete the tour, including the special exhibit in 1.5 hours...easily.

Good, for a quick visit.

This museum is good if you want to have a quick visit. Maybe you have time to spare. Its just a small museum, but a nice place that is well laid out. It is also in a very good location, with plenty of places to eat and have a drink nearby.
I enjoyed the art that was specifically on the history of Brest, however i feel as though some of the other art was not as good in my opinion.

Nothing flash or impressive but worth a brief visit. We had an hour to kill waiting for a friend and slipped in here. A middling collection but some interesting stuff. This is not an important gallery but there have been some useful purchases or donations. Don't come specially but drop in, if like us, you are close by.
