This museum exists for over 100 years. It was founded around 1922 by the association "La Maison du Missionnaire", founded by French missionaries stationed in Africa and Asia. To get attention and funds for their work, they regularly sent ethnographic objects to their home country .. these objects formed and form the core of the museum collection. The museum's collection includes over 4000 objects from Africa and Asia, acquired mainly in the period 1922-1940. The museum is located in a richly decorated large building in Vichy, wsl 19th century. During our visit an interesting exhibition "L'Art en Exil" about the life of Hàm Nghi (1871-1944), (child) emperor from 1884 to 1885 of Annam (present-day Vietnam). He had to Flights from the French rulers at a young age, went into exile in Algeria and also died there. Photos show an exceptionally handsome man. He was a very talented painter, work by him is shown at this expo. Further here many Asian and ritual African statues seen of high quality. Pleasant atmosphere in this museum. Interesting collection. The charming receptionist was very proud because we Dutch had come to Vichy especially for "her" museum.

Visit on August 11, 2023.
A very small museum, and a visit which did not give me any particular emotions. Neither Dogon art nor that of the Tuaregs, perhaps too far from my culture, aroused my interest nor really educated me.
Too bad, maybe I wasn't ready enough for this discovery.
For 5€, however, it is worth doing for a more open mind than mine.

This Museum is supposed to have an interesting collection of Asian and African art.
Unfortunately they do not display much of it.
Exhibits are apparently aimed at children and what is shown is poorly labeled.
Avoid.

Bien cordialement
