This could not be more perfect - lovely stroll along the wonderful beach, with intriguing bars and restaurants hidden down the side alleys. We liked that bikes are not allowed, so it’s you and other pedestrians. Against a backdrop of the Pyrenees, it’s perfect.

Besides the small but crowded center this is the other MUST of the city. We have walked it at different times and it is always very beautiful. Furthermore, from here you can access the city beaches. Also very nice is the small kiosk located near the lighthouse and the entrance to the marina where they serve aperitifs. (we didn't try it but the atmosphere is nice)

Great walk along the boardwalk. The beach didn't seem crowded, even though it was a beautiful sunny day (lots of space to spread out). The houses by the beach were super cute. I envisioned waking up in the morning, stepping out the door and across the little bridge for a morning run on the beach. How perfect!

A stroll the length of the promenade will take a good fifteen minutes if you start at the port end, take care if you have children as the promenade falls away towards the town without any barriers apart from that you will enjoy a lovely walk and in the evening you can enjoy the sunset.
At the other end of the prom if you climb up the stairs to the white building you will enjoy views over the bay.

Found St Jean De Luz quite by accident - spotted it on a postcard in Biaritz, where we were looking for a smaller, less flashy alternative on the beach. Drove down to Saint Jean De Luz and felt like we had struck gold - a beautiful medieval town right on a gorgeous sandy stretch of Atlantic beach with a great walkway - nice harbour, beautiful mountains surrounding and some gorgeous architecture. Everything I would want in a holiday! My only regret was only staying 2 nights. I'll go back and stay a week next time...

Take this walk slowly and enjoy the ambiance. Watching the waves crash against the break walls or wishing you were on that sailboat you can easily get lost in your thoughts while taking this area in. Had lunch at Cafe de Paris and stayed 2 hours just watching the bay come to life. Photographers dream.

The bay of St. Jean de Luz is arguably one of the most pleasant places to be. Somebody had the clever idea of putting it right next to the clusters of restaurants in Rue de la Republique and Rue Tourasse. What better way to walk off that three course meal and half litre of 'Oldarkie' than to start at the art deco lighthouse at the harbour entrance and follow the promenade path towards the headland of Ste. Barbe. Notice the old Basque houses with their raised entrances and little bridges over the walled gulley. This unusual arrangement is because of a big tidal flood in the 1800's. Stop for a while in the art deco 'Pergola' and note the little souvenir shop 'Rayon Verte' made famous by the film of the same name. Climb up to the top of the Point Ste. Barbe and look back at the spectacular vista of the bay with the mountain 'La Rhune' (900m) dominating the skyline. Stroll along the clifftop and notice here and there the concrete relics of war. The cliff is a maze of bunkered german sea defences and two large naval guns used to project out from the headland. As the sun sets, stroll back to the harbour and enjoy a glass of 'Izzarra' in Place Louis X1V. However, be warned - this simple stroll may set a benchmark that can never be beaten. Nine visits over thirty eight years and it's still up there at the top !

My husband and I rented a car and drove from Madrid to San Sebastian, then through French Basque Country: De-Luz, Pied-De-Port, and Sare. We highly recommend it, it was the most amazing/adventurous ride. Beautiful mountains and to see bikers riding on steep curvy roads was entertaining. Don't waste time in Madrid but go see Barcelona, San Sebastian, and Villanova (beautiful blue water just like Barcelona).

Our favorite French village was De-Luz, it is the most beautiful beach. You have to walk from end to end, it is a nice walk and the ocean has so many shades of blue, it is refreshing. Soft white sand, just awesome. We will go back and stay at a hotel on the water, worth every minute.

The Basques are Europe's oldest people, their origins a mystery and their language seemingly related to no other on this planet - obviously an interesting place to tour and explore. We began our Luze walk around the harbour area with its colourful fishing fleet to the fore and a glimpse of the lovely maison Maurice Ravel looming in the background. We moved slowly through the very busy and animated Place Louis XIV where the said Louis presided for forty days awaiting his royal brides arrival from nearby Spain. We then strolled up the attractive Rue de la Republique, awash with alluring cafes and on to the beach with its stunning vistas. Memories of the beach in Inchydoney in West Cork and the Promenade des Anglais in Nice immediately sprang to mind. We finished a very splendid afternoon back on Place Louis supping the sublime Basque Izarra and thinking that St-Jean de-Luze, as a resort is superior to its probably more famed neighbour - Biarritz.

You have read about the Basque end upsea-side town? well, this is it. Atmospheric narrow streets and lively fishing port where your sardines and anchovies end up being served in the umpteen restaurants around town.
Saint-Jean de Luz is overlooked by lush Pyrenean foothills and is graced by its long beach and its position at the mouth of the river Nievlle. This tuna-fishing port and beach resort is ideal for a seaside vacation
The port's many narrow streets flanked by old Basque houses are made for walking. The beach front is exceptionally pretty and is heavily patronized. Leave your car ,as parking is scant and difficult.
For one of the best views, climb up to the top the Colline de Saint-Barbe,a large hill on the northern curve of the water front. Lovely walking path along the clifftop with exceptional panorama. It leads to a jardin exotique and is a pleasant diversion. Another option, walk to Ciboure on the southern flank of the beach for superb eateries and beach.
The main square is the hub with plenty of outlets for imbibing and dining.
This is a lovely town to explore the region from.
