This is a very belated review, but enhanced and reinforced by the perspective of a year past... In June 2016 we took a 5-day custom tour of caves with prehistoric paintings in the Vezere Valley of the Dordogne region with Steve and Judie Burman of...More

Rouffignac was my favorite. While the paintings are less spectacular being buried under miles of rock, traveling in the cold dark and finding artistic treasures was a real trest!

These caves are wonderful. Lascaux is a replica, to be sure, but designed to within a centimeter of the original, and is identical in appearance. After a few minutes, you won't remember that it's a replica. Many of the other caves are also well worth...More

The art of Font-de-Gaume, Combarelles, Cougnac, Rouffignac, Cap Blanc and Lascaux (as experienced in replica at Lascaux II and Le Thot) is so much more sophisticated, so much more affecting than I imagined, even after seeing pictures. (The valley offers other sites, too.) You will...More

An amazing valley, full of history and wonderful caves to visit. Grotte de Font-De-Gaume and the Grotte des Combarelles must be seen. Need more than the one day we had, could spend three days easily visiting all the sites.

Valley Vezère isn't actually in Vézac nor near Chateauroux as the map indicates. I suggest you head up to Les Eyzies and start there. Meanwhile, you can spend many days visiting the great array of sights in the Vezère valley, for adults and children alike...More

A lovely area overall, but mindblowing in a historic perspective. So well preserved (font de gaume) and vivid pictures. And so much to see. It is hard to choose...

The Grottes de Cougnac consist of two separate caves, the first having a wonderful array of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, and the second which also has a small number of fantastic cave paintings. The tour is guided (in French - not sure if there's an...More

When we visited these caves, it made me totally rethink my view of the Neanderthals. These people were absorbed rich in this artform. Whatever purpose it might have, it is a pleasure to see it. We were in the Font-de Gaume cave (make sure you...More
