This was absolutely lovely. The food was great. The vibe and ambiance great! The ride on the Sienne was great. Great views. It was quite pleasant overall. You get a bottle of wine with your dinner, but can order additional drinks for an extra cost. Just make sure if you're ordering a martini up, you tell them NO vermouth. In Paris as a whole they put waaaaaay too much vermouth in their martinis. It's not a thing there so they don't know what a dey martini is. Yes, the boat was loaded with tourists, but who cares? Everyone was having a good time and was nice. We heard peeps from Chicago, New Jersey, NYC, etc. Some even from other parts of France coming in for a romantic weekend. Definitely recommend. You'll love it! ❤️

I had a five day river cruise with Croisi Europe on board the MS Princesse d'Aquitaine started with introduction of the crew free drinks and dinner .A days cruise along the Garonne and the Gironde rivers to Pauillac after lunch a coach tour of the famous Chateaux and vineyards of the Medoc plus wine tasting. Next day started with a coach tour on the "Cliff Road" with time in Blaye and Bourg with explanations about the local history then Navigating along the scenic landscape of the Dordogne River to Libourne, The next days excursion to the historic town of St Emilion and wine tasting at the famous Chateaux Soutard was a fabulous and unique experience.. Explanations about the local history and some of the three river's secrets, provided by the guides and crew were excellent,I didn't take the last Bordeaux by night excursion but walked in to the City by our selves. I recommend this river cruise to everybody who wants to discover the Bordeaux region in a different very enjoyable way! The boat was very comfortable and the food and all the staff were great

We were 2 couples on the Aug 5th sailing on the River Royale - Bordeaux Vineyards & Chateaux cruise. We thoroughly enjoyed the week on the ship and all of the excursions which of course is why we love river cruising. We were on a connoisseur cruise which included some extra excursions such as the Remy Martin tasting tour and Sauternes parings lunch.

This was our 3rd river cruise and first on UniWorld so I’d like to focus this review on what I saw were the differences in our experience on the River Royale.

First let me say that when booking this itinerary we were going to book with AMA Waterways again as we loved our previous 2 experiences. We ended up with UniWorld because of dates and the River Royale was less cost at booking time...which is usually not the case.

Anyways here are the things that wanted to note:

1) Food - I would say that the food is excellent as was AMA. I found that there were more regional items presented than what we experienced on AMA (Rhine and Rhone). Lots of selection...and they will bring you whatever you ask for. Example, one night they had an amazing cherry sauce on the dessert. The next night I asked for the same sauce....voila presto a few minutes later the chef made some fresh.

2) Service - excellent and equally as good

3) Cruise director - Sharon was awesome as were the others on previous cruises. But what stood out was that Sharon made no regular announcements for excursions etc. This was very much appreciated. UniWorld takes the position that we all know the timing of everything as its our choice to show up on time...after all we are all adults right!! But what this did was reduce the “noise” lovely

4) ship design - the decorating was fantastic and I thought the washroom setup in the suite was much more useful than previous ships. This ship is going into dry dock over the winter for a complete refit so it will be interesting to see the improvements they will be bringing

5) transfers - to and from the ship were included even though we didn’t book our travel via UniWorld

6) Wine Service @ meals - I felt that this was better than the AMA Waterways cruises. We sought our the premium list on previous cruises. Now you may say...hey your in Bordeaux and you should experience fantastic wines...but we did a wine cruise in the Rhone and our Rhine cruise features Alsace wine region and the best Riesling growing region in I’ll let you draw the conclusion I’m getting at.

7) The Beds - OH THE BEDS - for me I would choose UniWorld again for this reason alone. The Savoir of England beds were heavenly....

8) Guides - all the guides we have had with our river cruises were excellent but one of the unique things about this Bordeaux cruise is that we had the same guides every day because of the ships proximity to their base and the local guide rules. This really made for a very different experience. I suspect this is similar for the other cruise lines but having not done them I’m not sure.

9) Ship size - The River Royale held a max of 138 passengers. For our sailing we only had 100. The AMA Waterways and Viking ships are all larger...a little more intimate experience for the Uniworld cruise IMO

10) tips included - less hassles at the end of your cruise. I know some operators do include this but we didn’t have this option for AMA

11) bar service - this was also included. On our AMA cruises, there was a very modest charge for premium drinks at the lounge bar. UniWorld is truly all inclusive and was much appreciated.

All of these items on their own are small but when you add them up I’m really glad we chose UniWorld and the River Royale. We will definitely consider UniWorld at the top of our list for our next river cruise.

Waiters do not speak good English and when they do not understand your order they tell you to go to the bar and get your own drink. Bike ride excursion the leader lost 2 riders for 40mins. Coach excursion the guide left 4 guests left behind because she failed to meet them at the agreed meeting point - she left the agreed time 15mins early- they contacted the ship who ignored their problem. They had to get their own taxi. On homeward journey we were left without a rep in Paris with no transfer to Eurostar. As a result 6 guests missed Eurostar to London. 5 emails have been sent to Scenic and they have not replied. Do not use this company as they have no customer service.

EXPERIENCE: We so enjoyed this river cruise in June 2014 that we went again in September 2016 with an itinerary that visited different wineries (although we would have been just as pleased to visit the same ones). Fabulous longship by Viking with luxury service, gourmet meals, delightful tours, wine tasting at top notch chateaux, clean, nordic designed efficient cabins, and phenomenal staff. Ship has 190 passengers and about 50 crew. Shore excursions all included plus other optional ones to purchase. Events on ship such as foie gras cooking (and tasting) demo by superb chef (both Chef Pascal and Chef Cesar). Fantastic daily entertainment by Blondie n the piano who also is an opera star. Dancing in the evenings. ON BOARD DINING: two options - main dining room or aquavit terrace which leads to the outside bow of ship. Always multiple options on the menu and they will tailor to your food needs - seriously gourmet food and we have eaten in gourmet restaurants all over the world. Champagne with breakfast, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner are all included. Full bar on board and one can purchase spirits packages. You can even purchase wine at wineries and bring onboard for no corkage fee. Ship has two coffee/cappuccino/hot chocolate stations available 24 hours and daily snacks (morning danish and croissants/midday cookies) CABINS: stayed in the French Balcony D and Veranda AA. Both are wonderful with adequate space for clothing, suitcases, etc so you do not feel crowded. The showers have great water pressure. TV with movies, channels, GPS tracking maps of cruise, channels showing ship bow view and view into lounge so you can be in room for daily announcements or go to lounge. Small fridge for your treats. Complimentary large bottles of water provided in the cabin and for every excursion daily. Free WIFI which is pretty consistent in working. LIBRARY: two computer stations and small books especially about Bordeaux and cities on cruise, board games. EXCURSIONS: They continue to add new things and vary itinerary based on river water level - we thought first time on cruise was amazing and second time, even added more things. SHIP: upper sun deck has lounge chairs and tables with covered tenting so delightful anytime of year; garden with herbs, golf putting, shuffle board, and a running/walking track PRE and POST trip excursions are available through Viking. We stayed 2 days in Bordeaux on our own. BOOKING YOUR OWN TRAVEL: If you arrive in Bordeaux it is incredibly easy to get to the cruise dock Quai des Chartrons. Taxi is about 50 euros and about 30 to 40 minutes. Alternative is taking #1 Bus - right outside the airport baggage claim doors - about 1.5euro. Take it to Gare de St Jean - about 40 minutes depending on traffic and then switch to the C (pink) line tram ( a couple euros) and go to the Chartrons stop (about 10 minutes) and you will see the longship - about 300 feet to walk (2 minutes). BORDEAUX Wine tour - prior to the cruise, we took a private wine tour with Nicole Croft (SIP wine blog and tours) to 3 wineries and we did this on both of our trips to Bordeaux. She is a terrific knowledgeable guide, who even teaches classes in Bordeaux, and arranged the chateaux wine tasting tour to our specifications.

Was scheduled as three hours starting at 12 noon arriving at 11.45. There were twelve in the queue.Passengers kept arriving, boat departed at 12.30! We returned at 2.30! The confirmation said English speaking guide. No guide. Starter and dessert excellent, main course chewy lamb shoulder and harricot beans. Poor value.

Hello CarolD56, Thanks to share your experience with us. We are delighted to read you were appreciated the quality of food. We are so sorry to read your comment and your disappointment. In deed, the timing of the lunch is this one. Maybe there were misunderstoods during the reservation and this kind of cruise was not for you. Actually, we propose a sightseeing cruise that's called UNESCO or a package with la Cité du Vin. I transfer all your comments at the commercial department. We hope you to see you again beside it these comments. Regards, The team of Bordeaux River Cruise

We were disappointed in this "river cruise". The commentary was ad-libbed, French and English, but was more engaging in French. The wine was mediocre and I think we would have been better off to book a non-wine tasting tour. The sights along the tour are clearly visible from the river walk and we learned more of the history of Bordeaux and it's architecture on our own. It was not a expensive tour, but we would not recommend it. A walk along the river with a good guide book and a bottle of wine at an outdoor cafe would have been much more emjoyable.

Save your money. Worst dinner cruise I have been on. Food was awful! No choice on what to have to eat. Not everyone eats squid or frois gras. My vegetarian friend had salad for lunch but all that was in it was a few vegetables, no dressing, not even oil or vinegar. After paying $90 for the cruise, I am told coffee or tea is extra! Just horrible!
No commentary on board so we did not know what we were looking at and most of the scenery was of junk yards and decrepit fishing shacks. Very disappointing. I would not recommend this to anyone!

Hi Lisa, We are really surprised by your review, especially about the tour and the lack of taste about the food. However let us share with you, our surprise for the lack of interest that you see in the historical Bordeaux (Miroir d'eau, Place de la Bourse, Quai des Chartrons ...) and the modern part of the city (La Cité du Vin for example). If you were looking for a commented cruise about the city, we propose different cruises with a guide for a commented tour. Concerning the menus, you can find every information about it on our website so you can choose the right menu according to your taste. And if we recognize that we cannot please everyone, we remain amazed by the radical nature of your remarks with regard to the large number of positive feedback. We regret, despite all and sincerely not to have lived up to your expectations and remain at your disposal.

We were picked up from Bordeaux airport by Uniworld bus . It was a 20 minute drive to our ship River Royale. Crew took suitcases to cabin. We then had coffee in lounge. Lunch was served in restaurant. Food was amazing and was buffet. Cold salads etc hot choice then delicious desserts. Wine was included and was plentiful . Our cabin had double sliding door and good size shower & toilet. Plenty of storage space . Television.
We had trips to wine chateaux as we travelled and pleasant scenery. Market trips too. Oyster tastings and canelle demonstration by chef & assistant as we sailed one afternoon. All staff were so helpful . Welcome Dinner Cocktail Party & Grand Finale Dinner in last evening. Cabins serviced twice a day and each evening a little gift for each of us . Also as we have travelled with Uniworld before were give a free laundry bag of washing & a useful shopping bag. This trip I can highly recommend especially for red wine lovers.

The staff could not have been nicer. The food was great. The drinks are about average and what one would expect on an all inclusive trip. The cruise was a bit disappointing. We did go to the places mentioned in the brochures, but much of the time we were docked with other river cruise boats either between us and the shore or between us and the river. We were taken to three vineyards. Two were the typical go in to see how they make wine then spend time in the shops. They were beautiful, but commercial instead of informative. The third one was a castle formerly for royalty. Nice self guided tour of the castle and really nice lunch with tastings of the wines they produce (good stuff).
