Probably skipped by many, it's an intriguing old market in octagonal shape. It was built in middle of 19th century. It's covered, inlcuding covered perimeter walkways. Nowadays it serves as a cultural centre for exhibitions, meetings, debates and concerts.

The market in Chartrons (Halle des Chartrons) is worth visiting for the "market" itself and for the way to it from the tram stop (line B) at Chartrons. You may use tram line C and get off at Paul Doumer stop, which is closer, but you would miss the recommended stroll through Notre Dame street.
Notre Dame is a narrow quiet street with small shops on both sides, many of them selling antiquity. You may sit down for a cup of coffee in one of the small cafes on the sidewalk or inside, or you may buy some bread or pastry at the small bakery. Heaven.
If I mentioned Heaven, in front of the bakery stands an impressive church - Eglise Sainte-Louis. the "market" is nearby.
The market is really a group of shops and restaurants surrounding a rectangular square.
I can recommend three of these shops (they were the only ones we have entered) :
- A maker of cheese and creams with all kinds of milk products, solid and liquid. The strong odor inside may deter some, but we liked it veru much and bought some of is specialties to bring home.
- A coffee shop where you may sit for a good cup of coffee, but also by some ground coffee or coffee capsules (Nespresso compatibles, I have already checked) much cheaper.
- A Tea House, where we spent a lazy hour of calm and breeze at the open back yard enjoying a pot of excellent tea. Difficult to choose one as the tea menu contains many many kinds.
Nearby you may also choose to visit the museum of maritime history or the museum of wine.
