The Old Castle in Bayonne is not really a tourist attraction. It still belongs to the army and is not open to visitors. The castle took its name of ‘Château Vieux’ (Old Castle) when a new castle (‘Château-Neuf’) was built on the opposite bank of the Nive River. The origins of the Old Castle are said to go back to the 11th century but it must have undergone many transformations since then. The present-day construction doesn’t look medieval at all. There isn’t much else to do than admire the imposing mass of the castle rising above the neighbouring streets. After visiting the botanical garden, we walked through the postern gate (‘La Poterne’) leading to the Old Castle but it isn’t an original castle gate

The fort is still be used by the French military so no visits. From the outside, it's quite an impressive castle.

Plain exterior but you can not go inside. If you walk around the castle, you can see parts of ramparts and parts of old Roman walls. Overall, just walk by it.

Visit only on heritage weekend. Interestingly enough, the two sons of François the First were hostages there.
Regrettable that it was confiscated by the army and turned into nothing more than a mess. A little scandalous even! Mr Mayor, second building in Bayonne after the cathedral, a little courage and go fight to get it back! Where at least its use.
