The largest square at the center of the city of Strasbourg. In the square is a statue of general Kléber, under which is a vault containing his remains.
Most of the luxury brands have opened their shops in this prestigious and historical area of the city. Home to the apple store and galeries lafayette dept store.
The first name of Place Kléber was Barfüsserplatz ('square of the barefoot nuns' in German: square of the bare-feet-goers because a Franciscan monastery was standing along the square). In the 17th century the name changed to Waffenplatz ('arms square' in German). On 24 June 1840 the square was finally renamed for the French general Jean-Baptiste Kléber. During German occupation in 1940-1944, the place was renamed after Karl Roos, a local ethnically German politician executed by French authorities in 1940 on the charges of espionage for Germany.
Traditionally, a huge fir tree (30 m) coming from the Vosges mountains is erected every year on the south west of the Place Kléber and inhabitants deposited gifts for the poors. During the Christmas market, the booths of 50 charitable associations make the Village du Partage (village for sharing).
Cafes, Shopping, Views, beautiful architecture and Christmas markets are what you will find in this historical square.

This area has all the big name shops and cafés, like Galleries Lafayette a little further down, the Apple store, Printemps, Lush Cosmetics, Sephora and more. Also has big chain eateries like Starbucks and McDonalds. You'll see many locals scrolling around the square, window shopping, as well as students sitting at Starbucks in front of their laptops. This is also where they put up the large Christmas tree in December. This area will give you more of a feel for the local's daily life.

Have previously visited just before Christmas when markets are held and it was amazing. This time around I found it a little boring.

This is the largest square in Strasbourg. It is nice. It is surrounded by old buildings which mainly have department stores in them. There is also a Starbucks in this square. It was fun to walk around and it is close to the main tram station

The largest square in the city of Strasbourg can be found on Grand Ile (Great Island), which represents historical and commercial centre of Strasbourg.
This city square is named after Jean-Baptiste Kleber, born in Strasbourg in 1753, who was French general during French revolutionary wars.
The square is surrounded by many shops, markets, restaurants. Among the statue of general Kleber, the dominant building is Aubette Palace, which is built by king's architect Jacques Francois Blonde between 1765 and 1772. Today, after restoration in 2006, it's packed by a few shops and restaurants.
I would recommend.

Dramatic lighting and the city's biggest Christmas tree during December. An excellent farmers' market at other times.
