Stop for central Strasbourg from airport.
My husband and I decided to stay in Strasbourg over the new year. After landing at th airport it is well signposted to get the train into central Strasbourg. Tickets for the train can be bought on the platform, but you either need coins or a VISA card. After a short train journey to Gare de Strasbourg it was a short walk to our hotel. The station has plenty of ticket machines and an information desk, easy access to trains and information board giving up to date information.

    One of the best
You shall not get lost in this well signalised railway station. Neat toilettes, spacious waiting rooms, nice cafés and convenience stores. The Strasbourg Cathedral is within walking distance. Outside the gare you will find bus stops that take you to other parts of the city.

Accesible station for the rest of the Alsace region
A 2:00 hrs ride from Gare de L'Est in Paris. There is a luggage store office in the 2nd floor, but it only accept coins! First, your bags will go into an X ray machine, and you will also pass a machine before reaching the lockers area. We chose one of the large locker in the lower row ($9.50 euros in coins) and were able to fit inside 2 medium sized suitcases and 1 hiking back pack with no major issues. Office is open from 0700 am to 0900pm, you can leave your bags a maximum of 72 hours. We were able to explore Strasbourg with no bags (you could also do Colmar if you arrive very early), and then picked up our bags and got our train for Switzerland.

This was a rail holiday for us so we became very familiar with stations. This was one of the better ones but still could improve slightly.

From a distance it looks like a spaceship but inside still retains the history and beauty of years gone by. It is extremely big so allow plenty of time to find your train and get the right platform.

The thing we didn’t like was the information office. Lots of people working there but none of them seemed keen to help with our query.

We waited for 15 minutes with a ticket and eventually walked off as the queue just didn’t move.

I asked the lady if she could help in English and she shrugged her shoulders said “I speak French “ and wasn’t interested.

Other than that, it is a great place to catch the train and it’s only a five minute walk into the city centre.

Not knowing about it, a surprise was to see the entire frontage enveloped in glass panels supported by metal arches. Nevertheless it’s still possible to admire the classic 1883 façade from within the glassy envelope.

Catering for the advent of TGVs in the city, the development was unveiled in late 2007. It’s an impressive undertaking, seeing the entire 150 metre length off to the distance.

Gare de Strasbourg- is the main railway station in Strasbourg.

We visited this historic station during a change of trains from Basel (Switzerland) to Marne La Valee (France)

This station is one of the busiest in France.and replaced a previous station inaugurated in 1852.

It was built between 1878 and 1883 by the German architect Johann Eduard Jacobsthal.

Lovely architecture.

Nice and clean railway station. Temperature inside was cosy warm. Outside though, there were a couple of homeless people sleeping on a green patch in front of the station and sometimes one might come inside to beg for money.

The stationis an architectural "statement2. Not too bad, except that they forgot, when installing the glass over the front of the 19th Century station, to include any airconditioning, There were some seats in the glazed area, but FAR too HOT to sit in during the summer heat. Inside the older building, there were few, if any, seats. Not too good for those of us waiting for transport.

A warm mug of tea before boarding train here. But this building, with modern facade to war time building, a scruffy guy strated an altercation of war time reminiscence with me. Attempted mugging, with no law enforcement persons in sight. Frightening experience

The station is easy to negotiate, and as it's Covid time, the walking paths are well indicated. The tram is right there and easy to access.

I have rudimentary French and could navigate Parisian stations with more ease than this one. Which area is for departures and which for arrivals is not obvious. It is an older station and train tracks are on an upper level. Then when ascending to the track you have to make sure you are on the correct side of the track. It does not have stalls for electronic e-tickets like Parisian stations. It is more old-fashioned in lay-out and function. There is an information booth and some staff circulating who can answer questions and be of help.

We were visiting France and Germany Christmas Markets and needed to travel from Strasbourg to Mannheim, Germany. We did not have train reservations and sought out the Frence Railway to buy our tickets! The attendant spoke English very well and was helpful in getting us to Mannheim and Colmar, France. The Gare is clean and everyone is friendly and helpful.

A very modern looking railway station and surrounding amenities. It has a number of hotels literally across the road, so it is well situated for visitors to this area. A good starting point for visiting many of the tourist attractions in the area.
