I have family in France so generally I love visiting. However, this visit to the Museum in Modern Art was the worst experience of my life . The museum closed at 1pm and the staff was terribly rude and did not allow exiting visitors to go to the bathroom. They also pretended not to understand English when I asked to see the manager. The staff behavior was totally unacceptable in the context of an cultural institution . They should be fired !

It does have only a few of the great artists of our modern era, but does not suffer because of it. There is an intriguing display of Kandinsky’s work and relationship with music. Some of the minor artists and their attempts to create a new path, and of course the contemporary works of some that I’m still trying to absorb….

Upstairs, various works by different contemporary artists are presented (some of which are better known than others such as Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, Christian Boltanski, Jean Arp...). They are ordered by themes such as Shapeless Forms/The Human Condition/Natural Stories.

On the ground floor, a room is dedicated to Gustave Doré, an artist born in Strasbourg. Others concern impressionist and post-impressionist works by Sisley, Monet, Pissaro, Cézanne, Signac, Vallotton, etc.
Carabin's work is highlighted in a section of the museum in parallel with the decorative arts of Gallé in particular.
Finally, artists such as Braque, Armand, Kandiski, Picasso, Vicor Brauner, Niki de Saint Phalle,... are also exhibited on the ground floor.

Please note: clear explanations translated into German and English inform visitors in each room.

A large modern and bright building just outside the old town. The museum is not very large, with works by important modern and contemporary authors; several themed rooms, which compare works by authors far from each other for times and experiences. For me the most striking work is the reconstruction of the Music Room by Vassily Kandinsky, originally designed for a Berlin salon in the 1930s. Three ceramic walls that reproduce Kandinsky’s drawings, displayed outside the exhibition. In the space a piano and original furnishings. It is suggestive to sit and immerse yourself in this space of colors and sounds. For those interested in contemporary art.

I have known this museum for many years, but the current clash is very unpleasant. By wanting too much to make the works "dialogue", we come away with an impression of artistic cacophony. Moreover, the lighting on the ground floor is absolutely catastrophic, giving off a yellowish glow which distorts the rendering of the works.

The works on display are worth the visit… for the rest…. The museum is aging badly, dirty interior walls, stained stairs, broken floor tiles. The staff is very busy... discussing this and that... in twos, threes or even more... What can we say about the surrounding areas where it will be good to stroll (we could even have installed works in the greenery...) if not a worrying area...it would take almost nothing...another effort!

Very airy museum, well equipped for a pleasant visit. Free and secure changing room. The tour is well organized and detailed. There is a multitude of diverse works, styles and different invoices. Discreet, correct, friendly staff. The only frustration is that you can't touch anything, even the giant and amusing polystyrene works. Too bad, it would be liberating to be able to touch and be a bit of an actor rather than an observer.

Very pretty light architecture. Very nice collection. Lots of stuff for the kids though. Fascinating temporary exhibitions. For the staff, helpful and not smiling at all. When you come across the huge spider robot, don't hesitate to ask the guardian to turn it on! Easy access

Wow, honestly one of the best museums I've ever been in. Went early so it was quiet. Got to see Picasso, Kandinsky and other famous names. Excellent mix of artwork to see, nice size and space. 2 floors. Can easily do in 1-2 hours or spend longer at cafe.

Short pleasant walk from old town. Recommend a visit to get out of the hot midday sun or for a rainy day.

At times I am convinced that the French are the world’s worst marketers.

Take French Museums, for example. Someone seems to go out of their way to disguise the entry point, in the hope that pesky and troublesome visitors will stay away.

Take Strasbourg’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art for another example. Not just happy with making their entry point invisible, they just decided to close for the day. A Tuesday, a day their website says they will open. They didn’t even bother to tell the staff in their café at the back.

Dear Director of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art,
A simple note on your website might have been enough to alert me, and the dozen or so other visitors that you were closed on Tuesday. Effective communication is such a simple thing. Please try it. Just once.
