Route des Vins d'Alsace is a beautiful drive through quintessentially picturesque towns. I am so glad I chose this route through Alsace for my road trip through France.. Beautiful. Memorable. Photo-worthy. Actually not to be missed.

We spent a day driving from Strasbourg to Colmar, stopping along the way. Gorgeous scenery, easy driving through beautiful small villages & towns. Great wines to taste & great food. Riquewihr is a must stop - such a beautiful town & we finished in Colmar. The old part of Colmar is so pretty. We were staying in Strasbourg so had to drive back but you could easily spend a couple of days doing the wine route.

The wine villages are like pearls on a string, one beautiful little town with lots of colourful half timbered houses decorated with geraniums, after the other. Many good places for a delicious meal and som excellent wines.

We rented a car and went all the way passing lovely landscapes and visiting several quaint villages and winecellars. Good roads all the way.

A trip through the wine rout is a must for wine lovers and a delight for everyone else. The rout itself takes you through a very lovely scenery of hills covered with vines, small, picturesque and very welcoming villages. Testing wine at various small family wineries is a delightful experience, and the white wines of this region are outstanding: the Riesling and the Pino Gry in particular/

We took a longish drive on a rainy afternoon, but it's also a great outing for sunny days, with lots of opportunities to stop and walk. Gorgeous scenery.

The hop-on hop-off bus was a great way to tour the countryside, see numerous small French towns laden with history, and enjoy wonderful restaurants.

Good drive through the countryside with loads of traditional buildings and towns. Worth the trip, together with many wine stops.

This was a great way to tour the beautiful old small towns and villages in Alsace. I started my trip in Strasbourg (LOVED old town) from where I took the train to Rosheim where I picked up an e-bike (see my review on their wonderful staff at the TI). Other than Obernai, where I lost the trail and had to circle multiple times before giving up and just guessing, the trail is well marked. I had created a list of places to stop along the way to taste wine (far superior wines available on the route to what I can buy in the States) but lost it so did not do much tasting. I would recommend finding a guide or checking with the TI to reserve some tastings.
From Rosheim to Colmar was wonderful, but I would not recommend continuing past this point if time is short. There were some terrific wineries north of Rosheim but I did not have the time to bike this part. I did this in early October and the weather was perfect. During the summer it might be too hot.
There were some interesting sites along the way, I even stumbled onto a monument to someone with my last name which was pretty cool. There is a marker on the road that an ancient battle took place on the plain beyond between a roman general and someone else.
The people along the way were wonderful and I enjoyed my meals, although watch the time as I kept missing the lunch hour and spent too many meals eating a nut mix I brought along "just in case".
I brought paniers for the bike from the states and they worked with the e-bike I rented.
I was mid-50s and not in the best of shape but had no difficulties as the e-bike assist helped- I only put it into the highest level of assist for 1 or 2 hills. Most of the trip I was okay without any assist, although towards the end of the trip I was more generous with using the motor.
Years later and I can't get this trip out of my mind. I will be back!

The Route des Vins d'Alsace runs along the base of the Vosges for perhaps 100 km with, for most of that distance, vineyards on both sides of the road. It offers good views whether travelling by car or by bicycle.
