About
The Portico Library is an independent subscription library, exhibitions space, café and shop in Manchester City Centre. Still housed in its original purpose-built venue on Mosley Street, it is now open free to the public five days a week for an eclectic calendar of exhibitions and events, complementing the unique collection of books, archives and illustrations spanning over 450 years. Previously a members’ only institution with associates including John Dalton, Peter Mark Roget, Elizabeth Gaskell, Emmeline Pankhurst, Robert Peel, Val McDermid and Eric Cantona, all visitors can now enjoy a meal or drink in the café from Monday to Friday and participate in diverse outreach and engagement programmes including the prestigious Portico Prize and Portico Sadie Massey Awards.

Not your everyday local Library!
Jan 2020 • Business
This is not your everyday library!

Access is secure and you need to be buzzed in, before climbing up a steep flight of stairs.

Once inside, the library itself is amazing, it's a beautiful historic building as pictures already posted show. There's a lovely welcoming atmosphere and you can sit and enjoy a drink at the licensed cafe while taking in your surroundings.

However, unlike your local library, you cannot look at the books or roam freely unless you are a member.

That said, if you're passing, it's definitely worth a visit, even if it's only to partake of the lovely cheese scones served in the cafe 🙂

Like a members club

Well worth a look and what an amazing ceiling. By far the smallest of the four main libraries in the centre. Historical setting and free to visit. Very courteous and informative staff.

Historical Library
Dec 2019
This is a wonderful place and as a book fanatic it has a so much history. If you want to know about Manchester it is here on this building. The staff are always friendly and pleased to show you around. The only place you can not visit is the members room.

Worth a look over a cup of tea
Nov 2019
This is an easy to miss "Do not miss" attraction. Altho a full working library they do have a cafe so its worth having a look over tea and cake etc. Its beautiful dome is well worth a look and its atmosphere is so olde worlde. Yet another old Manchester library worth a visit

Concealed little jewel!
Oct 2019
I adored this this tiny library which is easy to miss on a corner of Mosley Street. The domed ceiling is beautiful and the atmosphere here is so nostalgic. There is also a cafe area, with home made cakes in the centre of the room. Narrow aisles at each side lead to a reading room but this is exclusive to members. However, I managed to sneak a look and it was just gorgeous, I could have settled myself in a leather armchair and read books all day but unfortunately I’m not a member! I actually only spent ten minutes here as it is tiny but it is definitely worth a peek.

Great building but maybe not for everyone as it is a fully functional library not a pure tourist attraction as such.

Walk up for a hidden and historic space
May 2019 • Couples
While walking around central Manchester, drop in to one of its smallest libraries—the Portico Library. The staff is quite friendly and helpful and will happily guide you through their latest exhibition. It’s a lovely open space with an attractive domed ceiling and . . . walls of books. (After all, it IS a library!) On the day I visited, a few local members were cozily enjoying tea at the room’s center. The staff regularly publish a nicely put together brochure outlining upcoming events, and there’s even a small gift shop with some handsome postcards, etc. The place is quirky and charming and a pleasant contrast to the wealth and grandiosity of Manchester’s better-known Rylands Library. Fans of Elizabeth (“Mrs.”) Gaskell will also be happy to know that she was a regular visitor here.

Peaceful
May 2019 • Couples
Had heard about this library. It took some finding but once there it was amazing. Really interesting exhibition featuring books and who they had been borrowed by plus a ledger detailing borrowers it was lovely to just sit and look around enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
