Been on a visit to floral Manchester on this beautiful autumnal day which is turning into an Indian Summer. Gin clear skies and uninterrupted sunshine is rare in town but perfect for seeing the fabulous Castlefield viaduct. We were greeted by the lovely May and Angie who lead our tour . Just returning from New York where we walked the High Line a similar viaduct experience which is much longer with views of Manhattan. On a much smaller scale Castlefield Viaduct exceeds expectations with quality of the planting and the views across the city . No wonder people are calling it Manchattan . it’s an immersive experience with a fusion of sounds and sights of the metropolis and nature. This is enhanced by the trams and trains on either side which make it redolent of the age of steam . Angie brought it to life with her anecdotes dating from Roman times, through to the industrial revolution. I was greatly inspired and proud that the city we now call home was once the centre of the universe in terms of manufacturing and trade. Only a Mancunian woman and girl could have painted this picture in our “mind’s eye” and I left feeling a great pride in my and my family’s roots here. Took advantage of the weather to visit Mayfield Park Manchesters newest green space and finished off with tea and cake outside the Cathedral.

As the site of the Mancunium Fort from Roman occupation times, its heritage value is undimmed. In around 79 CE the Fort was constructed as one of an array of defensive battlements.
Following Roman times Christian worship has evidence of being present. Many centuries later the industrial age arrived and the rail viaducts are evidence of the transformation heralded by this.
Modern high-rise edifices are now to be seen around, so changes continue without halt.

We visited the Castlefield Viaduct project on one of the afternoon turn up and go experiences in December. It was lovely to be able to wander around and enjoy the planting and the views over the surrounding industrial heritage. It would be good to keep the balance between pre-booked visits and some turn-up and go visits that people can just wander around, perhaps both at the same time, and just limit the number in the park at any one time.
THe rest of the Castlefields area is good with the tram and rail bridges still in operation and the canal beow plus reconstructed Roman architecture.
The viaduct is just a few minutes walk from the Deansgate/Castlefields tram stop or you can walk there from the city centre. There is car parking available on site

A very nice garden, but what a palaver to arrange a visit. Having to book our tickets several weeks in advance really took the edge off the experience - as did the fact that we were only allowed to spend a limited time in the garden itself.
Isn't the whole point of a green space in the heart of the city that it should be available to visit on the spur of the moment?

"Katherfield Park was a hidden gem during my stay in Manchester. Its charming landscapes, featuring lush greenery, quaint pathways, and a picturesque lake, made it a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll. The park is less crowded compared to others, allowing for a more intimate and serene experience. I particularly enjoyed the children's playground and the beautiful floral displays. It's a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy nature's beauty."I bought a railcard on trainpal and got a 20% discount when I entered the RC777E code! Hope to help those who come to the UK to play~

The neighborhood remains a bit underexposed, which means there are few tourists, which is a good thing. There should be a bit more documentation to make a good walkthrough. Now the information is too limited. The panels provide some information, but some 'local color' in the information would have been better.

The Castlefield area is in the West area of Manchester and is named due to the former Roman ruins still in place of the original settlement.
In addition to the Roman area there are also the buildings from the Victorian area where former warehouses have been restored to now be flats, restaurants and bars.
There is a free bus that runs round Manchester and drops you nearby. Alternatively you can use the train and get off at Deansgate or the tram and get off at Deansgate/Castlefield.
There is a huge variety of things to see in the area so well worth checking out if you are in the area.

This is a fabulous place to spend some time especially when the weather is nice. From the cobbled streets to the canals to the Roman ruins there’s lots to see and you see something new every time you go there.
An added bonus is that there are some of Manchester‘s best pubs and restaurants very nearby so no excuse not to be fed and watered. There is a fair amount of paid parking in the area and decent public transport links as well by tram or train or bus.

We visited on the spur of the moment and were able to enter without pre-booked tickets ... as it was not overly busy. Fascinating work in progress. The viaduct garden is already a lovely tranquil oasis 'in the sky' with canals and Roman gardens nearby.

Came to see the roman fort - felt a bit disappointed with the state of everything being literally quite abandoned. There is a good amount of information around but a little bit more of love would bring the place to live. Plus, I wouldn't come around here at night.

Could you recommend us if we should visit this place at the end of this month for photos?
As far as I see, it doesn't seem beautiful for that purpose but rather peaceful to stroll around.
thank you.

Is there parking nearby please
Written June 11, 2016
There are parking on the street but they are not free.
You can park in Salford (just the other side of the river) for free after 3 pm on Saturdays and all day Sundays. However, because it is for free, it is not easy to find a place and the available parking in Salford is closer to Manchester Cathedral (the other end of Deansgate) than it is to Castlefield, although it is still walking distance still.
I would recommend to park on a car park located just outskirts Deansgate Tram station (Euro Car Park) where you can park for 2/2.5 pounds for all day during weekends and then walk towards city center / Deansgate Tram station (1 min walk). Cross the road and walk towards Castlefield through the canal. It will take you 5 min walk and you will enjoy it!
P.S. Please call Euro Car Park for more precise information regarding the car park prices during the weekend as they may had changed from last time I was there.

My husband pushes me in a portable wheelchair, though I can climb some limited number of stairs. We would like to explore some of the Urban Heritage Park and wonder what would be a good access point by taxi or possibly by public transportation.
