About
This former church and Franciscan friary has been described as architect Edward Welby Pugin's masterpiece. Derelict for many years, it was saved from ruin by the charity and building preservation trust that still maintains and operates the site to this day. Today, The Monastery operates as a venue for hire and heritage visitor attraction. All proceeds from venue hire go towards the preservation and restoration of the site. The Monastery aims to be open to the public every Sunday to Thursday between 10am-4pm with free parking and free entry, however, we do kindly ask for a donation to support the amazing ongoing work of the Trust. The Monastery is closed on Fridays and Saturdays for exclusive weddings and private events. Please always check our website before visiting in case of any unexpected closures. On behalf of all The Monastery team we look forward to welcoming you very soon!

My friend invited me to a Health and Well-being event at the Monastery today.

We arrived at 11am and a lady on the desk explained what was planned for the day and collected our £5 admission.

We had a look round the stalls and asked about the ‘Laughing Yoga’ class later that day, but the highlight of this whole visit was walking round this beautiful building.

I have been to visit on a number of occasions, as living in Gorton it is on my doorstep, but today I got to take time to see it in all its glory and it is a truly breathtaking piece of architecture . 💕

Gorton Monastery is quite simply stunning, and to learn about the restoration work (there is information and videos available around the building) was fascinating. To think we nearly lost this building, that was designed by Edward Welby Pugin, who’s father designed the Houses of Parliament, is beyond belief.

If you are in Manchester you MUST take time to come and see Gorton Monastery and take in all its splendour.

To the people who campaigned to save it, the sponsors who funded the ongoing restoration and the people who continue to raise awareness and funds, thank you ❤️🐝❤️.

Long may it be in our hearts. ⛪️

I took a friend for lunch yesterday, we were warned that the menu was limited. To pour great surprise the menu was fine, specially as my friend is Vegan, and very strictly so. The server ( Carl ) was extremely helpful, despite the fact that he was working on his own and was very busy. Nothing was too much for him and he had the nicest personality. WE had the Mediterranean veg. tart which was served with salad and crisps. The tart was very tasty would highly recommend.

Beautifully restored monastery. Well worth a visit and can imagine a great event location. Good information boards setting out both the story of the monastery in the community and the process of saving and restoring the building .

Jersey boys plus afternoon tea was something I booked for a friends birthday in January 2022
We were right at the back with the bar queue impinging on our table
Acoustics really bad also and given I had booked so far in advance had hoped for a better table ( no choice given when booking about table allocation)
Afternoon tea was poor. Frozen and soggy quiche with stale sandwiches and mass produced cake. Not at all worth the money paid . Lukewarm coffee and tea and kept having to pester staff for more milk and refreshed beverages as once the pot emptied no hurry at all to bring out more.
Event was listed as ending at 5.45 but jersey boys ended at 5.15 so felt it wasn’t at all worth the money paid
Disappointed as had looked forward to it for ages 😞

Elvis afternoon tea, well Elvis was good. The afternoon tea was poor, hard sandwiches, small cakes little effort. We were on a table of 10 with one small pot of tea and a pot of coffee, and very small jug of milk. It would have been better to have a hot drink with the food, we did ask for more tea but the extra tea came well after the food. The entertainment was great the Elvis singer was really good and engaging. Very good atmosphere however very cold in the venue everyone had their coats on. Not sure I would go again.

This beautiful building induces a sense of calm.
I was there for a handmade market which I had organised the staff went over and above to help me set up and get everything as I liked. The event went down really well and we are back in May 20.
Only complaint was the amount of time it took to get a coffee and cake. But the staff have promised to review this.
The building is well worth a visit weather you are just going to look around at its beautiful features(The knave is something else) or going to one of the many events like our handmade market.

Went to the Queen by Candlelight concert tonight. After the 1st song I thought there had been a murder, but after further performances realised it was a serial killing. Left at interval. Stunning venue though but would have preferred a bit more space between seats

Went to see Queen Extravaganza at The Monastery on Saturday. Absolutely stunning venue. The staff were fantastic, especially Daniel Wood who went above and beyond to help with my access needs. Will definitely return. Deborah x

Went to the Queen by Candlelight concert earlier this month (Feb). Very tight set up, and not great visability at the back. Music was a bit distorted, but great atmosphere. Stunning venue though but would have preferred a bit more space, and get closer seats.

Hi @872vireng, thank for taking the trouble to leave us your comments. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the concert, building and the atmosphere. Queen by Candlelight is a very popular event which does sell out, hence the tight spacing. Tickets are allocated according to price tiers, so it is possible to sit close to the front, but the ticket price is higher and these seats often sell out first. The only solution to this is to book as soon as tickets go on sale, that way, you'll get the choice of seating you prefer. We hope this helps and that we'll see you for another wonderful evening soon. Warm wishes, the Monastery team.

Just a beautiful building. The history of the place is fantastic and all on display for visitors.
We came here twice, once for a party and it was so amazing that I booked some rooms for work here too.
Great service, lovely staff, great food and refreshments.
