There are a number of ways to access the Trough of Bowland from the Lancaster area. Having traversed other routes previously, this time we decided to go via Dolphinholme and Abbeystead, heading around the far side of the Trough, in the general direction of Clitheroe. I hadn't been round this side before and the route which follows the line of... More

The Trough of Bowland and its surrounding areas are really stunning, and great for walks and cycles.

This is superb countryside with a variety of environments and views along the road. Travellers will need to be aware of occasional cattle crossings on the road and the occasional sheep wandering along the road. There are pubs and restaurants scattered around this area which are well worth a stopover for lunch or to refresh the thirst. When we went... More

If you want some very distinctive scenery with an almost complete lack of people then the 'Trough' is for you. I have visited tens of times in the last few years for some great picnicking and hiking opportunities. The only remotely busy day is a Sunday but it is still very easy to avoid people in this massive unspoilt area... More

Beautiful scenery as you drive through the hills winding up and round and following streams that have also cut their route through. Lots of places to park and picnic in the summer, or sledge in the winter. Free roaming sheep need to be watched out for on blind bends

Lovely countryside travelling across the forest after a stop at the docks. It makes a more rewarding journey when travelling south from Lancaster rather than getting bored on a motorway; Just allow plenty of time because you will inevitably want to stop and stare at the surrounding nature. It's one of those wonderful, unspoiled and ignored places that people often... More

We sometimes cycle through the Trough of Bowland. The Trough is a bit "lumpy" and asks you to ascent (and decent) a lot, biut every climb is rewarded with magnificent views of the North West. Certainly worth while the exercise and the cramps the next day

Beautiful countryside dotted with dozens of pretty villages and interesting places to eat, drink and visit. Not great for public transport.

Best place for a picnic in the summer with the kids , and they get away from the computers and get some fresh air
