Although the Pennines extend westward almost to Lancaster, few would expect such a rugged road so close to the city. You leave Lancaster and take a steep climb into the hills. Then, suddenly, the road drops down into Wyresdale - a babbling beck and plenty of picnic sites. Then you are climbing again, up and over a narrow hairpin section... More

Beautiful wild scenery. Take some time to drink up the atmosphere. It is a minor road but it's Lancashire at its best.

The Trough is a fantastic English landscape - full of rolling countryside, game birds darting across roads, winding lanes, small isolated farms with wispy smoke rising from their chimneys, and several good inns to stop for a pint or some food.

Words cannot adequately express the beauty of the trip from Clitheroe to Lancaster via the Trough of Bowland, especially now that the crown of autumn beauty is reaching its zenith. Wonderful autumnal colours that warm the heart. Just a word of caution though...... avoid driving down into Lancaster on a Saturday.....the traffic is absolutely atrocious. Especially avoid the road to... More

The Trough of Bowland is actually a narrow pass that leads eventually to Lancaster. It is a lovely drive though narrow in parts. There are several walks along this route and well worth a visit.

I LOVE this place, it's scenic, with beautiful landscapes and I've seen some amazing wildlife. Although the queen owns most of it, which I think is appalling!!!! I love driving through the Trough of Bowland, and I love the Inn at Whitewell!!

The Trough covers many miles and this review covers the section running from Clapham towards Clitheroe. This is definitely a clear sunny day venue or a crystal clear frosty morning tour. In the summer /autumn months this is definitely the place to go for panoramic views and miles of colour. In frosty weather, the fir trees glisten and show colours... More

Well worth a visit if driving/walking or cycling in the area. Stunning scenery. We even had nice weather, which was very lucky.

I love coming through here on my road bike. I've done this a few times from Preston and then back over Longridge fell. Great day out with a fair bit of climbing.
