About
Owned by the serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, through the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancaster Castle is a wealth of English history. Since being established by the Romans the castle has been a home to monarchs, a place of trial and execution, and a working prison right up until 2012. Still a crown court, the majority of the castle is now open to the public for the first time in over 1,000 years.

Terrible guided tour, the female guide gave us a monotonous history in a few rooms. There was no opportunity to take photos or look in the cells. Too much time taken up in the court rooms.

Lived in Cumbria my whole life and never visited Lancaster castle before, despite visiting Lancaster so many times! Decided to have a gander in and ended up doing a guided tour. The tour itself is 60 mins and costa £8. You are give a guide who in our case was perfect! Cameron was spot on, you could tell how enthusiastic he was about his job and the history he knew, he did fantastic impressions and fully immersed us in the tour. He was extremely informative and always attempted to answer our questions with his knowledge. Highly recommend! We saw the courts, the prison areas and even the room where people stayed when they waited to be hanged. Fantastic!

A great tour, informative and funny thanks to our tour guide Cameron.
Managed to condense hundreds of years of history into an hour long tour. Well worth doing!

Don't expect a castle, it's an old prison and court room. We paid £8 each for the tour which i was really exited but it was evident right from the start that it was going to be the most boring tour ever, the guy was just going on and on so much we just turned off. When we eventually got to go inside the place we saw just 5 rooms which in each had to listen to the guy droning on and on and on, it was very disappointing indeed, i won't be going again, ever. There is nothing to see, seriously, it looks impressive from the outside but what a letdown the tour was. Nil points from me.

Visited the castle and took part in the 11.30am guided tour. Absolutely brilliant, the tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and interesting. Worth every penny and would highly recommend.

If you are interested in history and particularly modern history (the castle isn't all as old as you might expect) and a variety of use, this is the place for you. The guided tour is recommended and excellent value (£8 at the time of writing) and our guide Jack was humerous and very knowledgeable. The tour we did was not suitable for wheelchairs, check with the venue for info. The various ages of use over the centuries are fascinating including its uses as a prison and the history of the trial of the Pendle Witches. The cafe was okay, but don't expect full meals, cake, sarnies and beverages only during our visit. Photography not allowed inside because this is a working Crown Court building. See the old original cells and the more modern cells from HMP Lancaster Castle in use into the 2000s. Recommended visit.

One hour guided tour of the Castle, including some of the old dungeons and current working courthouses. Access to the Castle is free, but to really get a feel of it, and to visit the more interesting areas, you need a guided tour - and at £8.00 per person is well worth it. The tour guide, Cameron, was very knowledgeable, and really brought the castle and prison to life. If you're in Lancaster, this is a must for a visit

Cameron was our guide and he was fantastic. He would put on different voices when playing a character and was very informative about the castle and its history. We came up for a day trip and it was very enjoyable. A must see!
