Striking cotton workers were shot in 1842! Our democratic rights are fragile and badly in need of reform. Every time I pass the site I pay homage to those unfortunates who won the working people of Preston the standard of living they now enjoy. The...More

This was a controversial memorial when it was unveiled in 1992. The right wing local press were in their element in blaming loony lefties for this memorial on strikers who were shot in 1842. The style by sculptor Gordon Young is not conventional but was...More

The Preston Martyrs memorial is a very impressive sculpture on Lune Street. Unveiled in 1992, it commemorates the four people shot down during the workers strike of 1842.

I think this sculpture represents the struggle workers have endured to gain the rights we all take for granted. Not sure about the guns being pointed at the three figures opposing the gunmen

An unusual monument with an interesting history behind it, it is easy to walk past something like this every day and forget how unusual it is.

I had never seen this memorial before and when I did set eyes on it I couldn't understand how something so large could have missed my gaze since it's inception on the 150th anniversary of the shooting in 1992. The memorial commemmorates the confrontation of...More
