About
No golfing ability? No problem! Topgolf is a game that anyone can play (and win). Score points by hitting micro-chipped golf balls at giant dartboard-like targets on an outfield. The closer you get your ball to the centre or ‘bullseye’ and the further the distance, the more points earned. The fun and games don’t stop there; you can even indulge in delicious food and drinks brought to you while you play. What could be better?

We enjoyed visiting here before Covid and so thought we would try again. We have learnt before to always book a slot and so were quickly taken through check out and to our lane. The early morning sessions are usually the cheapest to book and when you get them for £5 and avoid the queue its money well spend - I have however seen the reserve lane prices go as high as £45 and although I understand supply and demand I feel this is greedy as it doesn't include the game costs so we would just go elsewhere when they do this. The lane was all very clean and Covid safe and as you are outdoors you can remove your mask. The kids enjoy the game although there is some disappointment that there are some big gaps on the field where you score nothing. We enjoy their milkshakes and have eaten there a few times and would recommend.

My partner and I were staying in Chesham for a short break and looking for things to do. I had heard of TopGolf before but we have no venues near us so as the Watford one was only 30 minutes from our hotel we thought we'd give it a go.

Our visit was on a Friday afternoon, arriving around midday. There was a short queue and wait for the desk, however this was made worst by the fact their card machine was playing up I think. We waited not much more than 15 minutes I think and got straight onto a bay on the ground floor.

The girl behind the desk took us through the membership / payment details and then showed us how to get the balls and set up the game.

We both had great fun and ended up buying more games afterwards.

I did feel it quite harsh that we were charged to join as members. Although its only £2 each for a 30 day membership, we live a two hour drive away so are hardly going to have the chance to make use of the membership again. It was just an unnessary cost for us on top of the cost for the games.

When you compare the cost to other activities, such as bowling for example, it does feel a little expensive. We were there for approximately 3 hours and spent a total of £56 on the membership/games, plus more for drinks. In comparison, it cost us less to visit Whipsnade zoo the previous day.

All in all it was a fun experience. Would definitely visit again, but they need to expand outside of London and the home counties!

We arrived at TopGolf at around 10:40 ready for the EDP session that started at 11AM. We then walked into the tent and went up to desk and were told about the different options that we would be able to do today and the lady was very kind.

We then proceeded to wait by the reception so that we could go and get checked in the start golfing. We went up to the counter at about 10:50 as we were told to and a man called Sandeep tended to us. Now it was going smoothly up until here. We were with Sandeep for 30 MINUTES because he had no idea what we was doing. We asked if he could ask someone if our area was still available, so he walked around the the desk and to the lady we first met. He didn't ask her anything, he just stood there behind her looking like a lost puppy. He came back and stood there not knowing what to do and said he was going to get a manager and didn't come back. So the man next to where Sandeep was, Neemai I believe his name was, helped us and went to get a manager. He was very helpful and kind.

However... we then went up number 44 and the first 6 people took their turns. BUT... we weren't told that only 6 people could go on each lane. So here lied another problem as we weren't told that 7 people couldn't be on one screen. Therefore we requested assistance and within 5 minutes someone came over to us. I didn't get her name, but she was very apologetic and kind to us although it wasn't her fault.

As we did the EDP (Eat, Drink, Play) we got food included. So obviously, we ate there. The food was very tasty and were big portions. We ordered 2 coke zeros, 2 diet cokes and also a full-fat coke, but when the drinks were brought to our table, we had 3 coke zeros and 3 diet cokes (the other 2 were lemonade so weren't mistaken) but this wasn't a life or death situation.

Overall, it was a good family day out but obviously there were things that were bad.

Booking / Queuing shambles. Website suggests that most people turn up and play on the day. The pre-booking costs a non-refundable £40 so I’m sure this is what most people do. What it doesn’t tell you is that you’ll have a 3 hour wait when they hope you’ll empty your pockets somewhere between the bar, the restaurant, the shop and a small putting green. No reason why they couldn’t take online bookings so this is just showing customers contempt and trying to shake them down.

The only reason this has received 2 stars is because after a 5 and half hour wait (that would have been longer had I not made a fuss at the desk that was overheard by the Duty Manager) it was good fun.
We arrived at 13:15 and were position 21, this didn`t concern us too much as my step son had been 2 weeks before and waited 2 hours when there were 80 people in front of him. We decided to have something to eat and drink but after we had waited 2 hours, we really hadn`t moved much in the queue. We queried the wait times several times before I finally got fed up and went to the desk after waiting 5 and half hours for a bay.
I was told we were now position 2 for an upper bay but as we had been at position 3 for almost an hour I was still expecting another hour wait. I wasn`t happy with that and the guy on the desk told me that as we had waited so long he could get us on a ground floor bay straight away. So we went with that, after some after making some adjustments on the system he came back and said we were position 4. Wait, What?? As I was querying this with him, my step son came over with his text message saying we were position 6! Just as I was just getting really frustrated with the whole thing, the Duty Manager, Sara, arrived and arranged for a bay to be cleaned immediately for us. Thank you Sara. We actually got our bay at 18:45.
The reason for the wait? If you pay £40 to book, you then take priority over anyone that has walked in, regardless of how long they have been waiting. But, if you decide to book it will cost you a non refundable booking fee and you still have to pay membership and game fees on top of that. The booking/queueing system is appalling and seriously needs addressing. I understand the reason for a booking
fee during busier periods but this should be deducted from the cost of your games on arrival.

Just echoing the comments previously. To avoid waiting for a bay you can pay a £35 fee to book an actual time slot in advance. So having booked two weeks in advance what they don't tell you is that fee is not a deposit, not an upfront payment. It's just a payment to get a slot which is non refundable. Disgrace. The website also sends you in circles if you want to book for more than 6 people. It recommends a 'bundle' at which point a very nice person contacts you to sell you everything under the sun. I know lock down was bad for some but this is ridiculous. When you get in it's not much better, at one point i thought to breath as going to cost me a pound a minute. Think Mr Fidler from Carry on Camping...

on the plus side the game , when we got going was fun and food was decent. Albeit quite pricey but i imagine you guessed that by now.

Blue card can only be used on the person who has it. Not even their own child could benefit from discount. Charging a family of 3 more than the zoo is ridiculous The game kept going wrong, didn’t get enough balls for the games we paid for and staff basically said tough. Well after paying that’s disgusting amount I expected enough balls for the games to be played, crisps from the bar taking 20 minutes to arrive. Fully ripped off. Was cheaper and more fun to go to Alton towers. No staff care. Took our money and made us wait for over 3 hours. Once we were locked in that was it. Tough tough basically. Two children spending the day waiting for a game at the driving range. We travelled over an hour to get to u and o will not be doing that again. So ripped of parents, children who had a rubbish day except for less than 2 hours of golf after 3 hours of waiting. Expensive, badly managed, badly planned, badly run, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID

Unbelievably frustrating. Unless you book and pay the fast track fee of £35 for nothing apart from jumping the queue, you have to wait a mind numbingly long time. Not really worth it and there could be a far better way of booking time slots.
Be prepared to wait a long long time

Absolute joke of a queuing system. Great game but lack of booking functionality (unless you part with £30 on top of games for fast track) makes it unsuitable for kids. Have been a member since 2004 and remember when the system started in 2015 but it is now so bad I go rarely. To turn up on 2 occasions recently to have to wait for 2 hrs (after queuing for half an hour already) across 4 different queues is farcical. Customer service not sympathetic and you’re expected to understand what 46th in the queue means in terms of waiting time (even they don’t know really).
Advice to operations is sort an online booking system out that doesn’t rip you off so that you don’t waste hours of your precious life to play a simple game. The cynic in me believes the current set-up is in place to make you spend more money with zero thought given to customer experience. #absolutejoke #fiercelyfurious

Upon arriving, the place was heaving both inside and outside. To book a bay I was told I was 79 in the queue and the person who was number 1 had been waiting 2.5 hours. Surely during the current pandemic, allowing people to book a slot makes more sense then ever! On top of this, if number 1 had been waiting 2.5 hours that means clearly no one had left! Another suggestion would be to restrict the number of games played or the length of gamea so that EVERYONE can have a chance! It's disappointing that you turn up regardless of what time and seems always impossible to play even a single game. In all honesty, the queue and crowd was larger then you'd see for even the clubs in Watford town centre with people hanging around all in the carpark, on the grass verges on either sides, outside on the seating area. Why have "covid rules" for booking if clearly these aren't being observed anywhere on the premises?!
