Great pub with efficient service

Out for a midweek birthday and started here, great service and good selection of drinks and will be trying the food on or next visit from reading the menu. Staff are freindly and a simple and easy to use website to order drinks to the table.

Amazing Management
Apr 2021 • Business
I was supporting a vulnerable adult who only wanted a pint and to listen to music, we kept hitting brick walls all over town due to the pandemic and booking system. We met Ollie the manager and after he let us have a table in the garden with no issues at all, accommodating myself and my service user with everything that was required for an enjoyable experience. I will definitely be visiting again.

Randomly opted to visit this evening after living locally for over 20 years. Well the welcome was warm, the staff friendly, service with a smile. Excellent drinks and a relaxed atmosphere.

Good variety of drinks
Oct 2019 • Friends
This places offers a slightly different environment and atmosphere to some other pubs in the town centre but the drink selection seems to be more diverse.

The courtyard out the back is large and busy at weekends which is a plus but could have do with a little work.

Brilliant food, awful bar
Sep 2018 • Family
Visited with my (grown up) daughter and her partner - who are both vegan.

The good bit is the food. Middle priced but really good vegan food which is absolutely delicious. Served by staff who are clearly passionate about their product and it showed in the quality. The food offering at this place deserves to be supported.

What it doesn't need is to be overshadowed by the loud and constant swearing of the (one can assume) same barman that spoiled the visit of 598Sarah. I am not prudish about this but the sheer frequency and volume of the guy was just too much to put up with.

To be honest, it seems as though the place doesn't know what it wants to be. The building itself is quaint. The inside is shabby. The food offering is excellent. The bar is pretty awful. Overall it is a real pity. I suspect that the food is reliant on the bar but they would do very well to find somewhere that is more in keeping with their product.

I am sorry to be so negative about the bar but there is no point in leaving anything but an honest review of the place as I experienced it.

Note to the bass player warming up for the jam night. Turn off the sub harmonic switch on your amp and back off the bass. The sound was very muddy out front with no real definition. Mind you, those Ashdowns are pretty boxy.

Nice pub

So glad we came across Drake's. Lovely little pub, does not feel like you're in Maidstone at all! Beer garden is great and gets good sun coverage with bits in the shade if you want it! And the addition of Ponga food is amazing!

Amazing food
Jul 2018 • Couples
This is a pub not a restaurant - it’s not gourmet or waiter service it’s a great pub with no airs and graces. The food served is vegan and gluten free and unbelievably delicious. Two mains and a side for £15 and no room for pudding. The best meal I’ve had out for ages and I can’t wait to go back!

Disappointing bar / lovely food.
Feb 2018 • Couples
I had been excited about popping in here, having had the place recommended by a vegan friend. The pub has lovely old fashioned feel and, as someone else says below "so much potential". The menu felt a little limited - a selection of pizzas (which did look great!) and a kebab style bowl. We both had the kebab bowel and it was lovely - my husband eats meat and really enjoyed it. The sad fact is that the chef is amazing - she needs support in the kitchen to provide a larger menu of her lovely food. Also they are aiming for more a bar style of food, rather than sit down dinner.

Unfortunately the pub is a little unloved. And finally the reason for the 2 star review - the sole bartender was loud and swearing constantly whilst talking to his friend. Everyone else in the pub was quietly enjoying their meals / drinks. He ruined the atmosphere. He mocked someone who phoned to book a table (it's a bar so you don't book tables - how this customer was to know that without phoning I don't know, we certainly hadn't known prior to coming). Honestly eventually we couldn't stand to stay there and listen any longer.

The lovely chef needs someone supportive to take on her honest food and grow a great business idea.
