The Anvil, Basingstoke: Address, Phone Number, The Anvil Reviews: 4.5/5

About
The Anvil is one of Hampshire’s largest entertainment venues and offers a wide range of entertainment for all ages including stand-up comedy, theatre, ballet & opera, classical music, pop concerts and pantomime. This year we’ve welcomed top class performers including Lee Evans, Boy George and Billy Ocean and also had the pleasure of hosting one-off events such as the last UK concert appearance of the great pianist Alfred Brendel.

On Boxing Day we visited 'Beauty and the Beast' at the Anvil and our party of three adults and three children had an excellent experience. The cast came over as genuinely enjoying being part of a performance that was giving all the audience great pleasure. Well done ... and thanks!

We were fortunate enough to have been able to go to the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's spring concert featuring a fabulous programme of Mozart's last three Symphonies nos. 39, 40 and 41 the "Jupiter" named some years after the composer's death probably inspired by the extensive use of trumpets in the first movement.Played on period instruments which lend much to the authentic sound created the orchestra is quite unusual in not having a dedicated conductor in charge. it was of course a wonderful evening and hearing the final three symphonies played consecutively was a great feast with excellent refined playing and a wonderful flute performance by I believe Liza Beznosiuk on the flute for Mozart 40. Sadly given the current health crisis it is unknown when we will hear the like of that performance again or when the concert hall will be able to reopen.
We certainly count ourselves as privileged that we have an International Concert venue in our town within walking distance. My wife and daughter were further fortunate to enjoy one of the last performances before suspension of operations when they attended Firedance- a Latin dance extravaganza - a present for mother's day.

Saw The Classic Rock Show. Really easy to get in & out, helpful & friendly staff, spacious with no bottle necks when the crowds were leaving, ample & clean facilities, comfortable seating, good acoustics. Good venue, would go again. The Classic Rock Show itself was brilliant, would highly recommend.

Taking a trip to Basingstoke we went to the Anvil to book something, for our own well being and to help theaterland. I approached the foyer and asked politely for a programme or booklet, to see what's on. I was told abruptly and in no uncertain terms, that because of covid there where no programmes and to look on the web. Her manner was rude ,unhelpful and unexpected. It was like being told off a school. I'm 77 and don't like being spoken to in this manner. Maybe the receptionist needs to go back to school and learn some manners, or is that part of the job?

I really like this venue. Seating is good and great views of stage. Bar areas good and the whole place is large enough to accommodate a lot of people. The classic rock show was amazing! Great evening!!

First time visit to this venue and would certinly go again. Logistically, very good for us due to the close proximity to the train station. Staff were helpful throughout, seating was very good, seemed to be more legroom than most other venues been to recently. Acoustics were good and overall very impressed. Would definitely go to future eventshere again.

We went to see swan lake recently which was very good. We were sitting in the side circle which meant looking down at the stage at a sharp angle which gave me a crick in the neck by the end. The only complaint i have is that there were some children in front of us that were continually moving in their seats causing a distraction.

A relatively small concert arena with good bar areas. Good acoustics and comfy seats. Situated in centre of Basingstoke. If you park in the Anvil Car Park it is very difficult to get out after a concert, it is better to park in the Festival Place car park, there is a pedestrian exit within 50 yards of the Anvil and mostly undercover. After the concert you will be away within 2/3 minutes rather than 20 minutes in the Anvil Car Park

Great venue with super friendly staff who kept us right on where things where at all times. Seats were good and comfortable. Performance was enjoyed by the two year old more than us!! 😊

We booked tickets for the Russian state ballet and performance of Swan lake, and were definitely not disappointed in their performance, we enjoyed all of it.
What we did not enjoy however, was the seats !! Firstly, we enjoy your theatre, and yes, the views are great wherever you sit, but.......
We’ve been coming to the Anvil for several years now, and over those years probably all those seats have probably had thousands of bottoms on them, and boy they feel like it !!
They look and feel worn, they are tatty in places, and not particularly clean.
Come on Anvil, isn’t it time you had them replaced, or re-padded and reupholstered ??
Really.....go and have a good look at them, sit on them for two hours, and tell me they are “the best seats in the house”
