Family
Visited many times during lockdown and the kids love feeding the ducks. The park has more than just wildlife for things to do as for the play area pretty modern area and a good sized area for the kids. Unfortunately the ice cream van is very expensive for a typical ice cream cornet £3.50 and upwards. Take a picnic as the picnic area is very decent and not to forget enough bread for the feeding of around 30 to 40 swans and well over 70 Canada geese.

Went along and have often driven past thinking we must visit here. So finally went along with family and once your around the lake you could forget bolton town centre is just down the bypass. Free parking is good and plenty of Swans & Canada geese for the kids and adults to feed. The park is very good for the children with many not so old apparatus to play on.

I grew up in Bolton ( many many years ago). And back then places like Moses gate country part did not exist.
A pure joy to walk from Manchester to Bolton and feel as though in the countryside yet only minutes from the towns.

You verge-off the busy dual-carriageway to the tranquil Moses Gate Country Park.
3 lakes, 2 rivers, a large park and country paths to suit all.
There is a modern playground for the kids, a large park for the older kids and the walks by the River Croal and River Irwell. There's even a visitor centre for enthusiasts. Even there's an ice cream van for those hot, sweaty days.

Although not in the midst of the most attractive part of Bolton, there is an abundance of native wildlife to be discovered.
Fantastic abundance of dragonfly and all 5 local amphibian species including the protected great crested newt are present and often seen. I have also seen Roe deer prancing around. No reptiles though. The best habitats are across the main road from the visitor centre area.
The lake attracts a phenomenal variety of birdlife, and bringing some bread for feeding is the way forward.
Parking is ample, walkways are well signed and there is an interesting visitor centre.
Definitely best park for nature within Bolton.

Moses Gate Country Park is a nice place to go. It doesn't compare to Heaton Park or other bigger parks by way of facilities, but there is plenty of space for dogs and kids to play with some variety in views/countryside,
The parking is free which is a pleasant change and there is usually no problem getting a space.
The main feature at Moses Gate Country Park are the lakes/ponds with wildfowl. These are great to walk around but there is so much more. The River Croal (which bocomes the Irwell) splits the park in two and it is bordered by the Bury Bolton Canal at the Little Lever side.
Walks along the river are great. There are fields for the dogs/kids to play and there is woodland. It also stretches across the road (Hall Lane) and continues towards Great Lever and Great Lever Gravel Pits. (This side is very quiet and far less people go here).
Worth a visit on a nice day for a picnic, or even on a gloomy day for a pleasant walk.

If I could give this area minus ten stars, I would!
Last Sunday, deciding to go here during the Covid 19 Pandemic as I had got tired of all my local walks, I got brutally attacked and mugged in this so - called park whilst minding my own business and just walking! Blood pouring down my face two thieving scumbags got away with my bag leaving me in a terrible situation, even necessitating a hospital stay! Unbelievable, I know, on a clear sunny Sunday afternoon in broad daylight! No CCTV in area at all, thereby letting the scumbags get away with it!
Horrible, horrible area NEVER to be visited again! I have told all my colleagues not to come here if this was the last park left on earth!!

Are the paths ok to walk round with a pram?

Further to the reply about copious wildfowl droppings i'd add that thats the situation around the ponds and there are plenty of similarly fine wide paths into and through the woods and up to the cemetery or across the river and then up or downstream. those up to the cemetery are steepish and will require a fair push but its all tarmac surface on those. the paths up and downstream provide lots of opportunity to follow the canal and its many interesting features on a level path thats also pram friendly but not surfaced. following these paths provide ample opportunity to return to the town or other access points for parking that allow many visits for different routes to be explored.

Where do I go with my horse trailer to park please can you give me information and details about parking charges if there is any?
paulsheridan2018

There's a road just uphill from the park that is a dead end and importantly it borders the park itself but wide enough for easy parking by large and high vehicles as it has the odd industrial premises on it and even a snack shack sometimes, do a google street view to get appreciation of the convenience but its pretty close and horses wouldn't need to trot down roads with cars on to reach the park.

Hi I wondered where to go to park my car and trailer to start my ride. I have never been before. Kay

Is it dog friendly?
Simon D
Manchester, UK141 contributions
Hi sorry for the delayed response.
It is dog friendly if your dog is on a lead unfortunately. This is just down to restrictions because of young children and other wildlife.
However, having said that whenever I have gone I have seen plenty of dogs off the lead, running around and having a great time. These seem to be well behaved dogs so I also thing that the wardens etc turn a blind eye to these.
I hope this helps a little.
But yes, they welcome you there with your dog.

Not seen any signs saying "you can't" so guess it's ok as long as you tidy up and don't damage the grass or trees
