Bolton Museum is a marvel of northern entrepreneurial spirit. As well as being housed in one of the country's finest inter-war neo-classical buildings (Grade II*) it houses some real surprises. It has the foremost Egyptology section of any provincial town, it has some wonderful Pre-Raphaelite paintings as well as modern classics, and Bolton also has an extensive collection of classical... I have visited Bolton Central Library on many occasions, not just to borrow books but for all the other facilities. Museum and aquarium are second to none. My grandchildren have had many interesting craft days during the holidays and the free film shows for Seniors and families are such a boost to the town centre. I have also use the... More

Kids enjoyed it very much, and found it interesting. Looking forward to our next visit. The library has a wide variety of books which allowed my kids to pick from multiple genres.

Visited while the kids were off school was lucky because I picked a quiet day . A big plus the place is free but unfortunately its not really changed a lot in the last 40 years . Egyptian section is very good but there is also very little new . Natural history section and the art gallery have been vastly... More

I took my nieces little girl there she's 3 and she loved the fishes even though some tanks where empty. We seem to have been waiting ages for the animal section to open but it is still not done . There is small animal section to look at which she liked ...then she played dress up and did some colouring... More

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to review Bolton Central Library and Museum. Just an update on the Museum we have got the go ahead to create an exciting new tribute to ancient Egypt could be open to the public by Spring 2018. An intensive schedule of work has been given the go ahead in principle by council chiefs,... More

The tanks are far too small for the fish kept here, it's downright cruel. There were people tapping on the glass and there were no staff around to stop this. I feel that there should be a member of staff here at all times and it would help if they knew something about the fish to answer any questions that... More

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to review the Aquarium. The fish are kept according to stringent Zoo Licence requirements. We have specialist members of staff who maintain the Aquarium and are available to answer visitors’ queries as well as front of house staff who patrol all galleries, including the aquarium. Kind regards Maureen More

Housing one of the UK's best Egyptology collections outside London, the museum also contains an interesting exhibit on Bolton life and Bolton people. You will see, for example, the only existing spinning mule actually made by Samuel Crompton and artefacts connected with Nat Lofthouse. The art gallery is pretty good, too, with works by the likes of Roger Fry, Vanessa... More
