Growing up in Bolton the museum used to be a place of great attraction. However on my last visit with my partner and children I was horrified to see how far the museum has fallen. The aquarium was so disappointing and not exactly full of fish. The Egyptian section has shrunk in size and stature. Another section of the museum... More

This was a very interesting day out. A beautiful building, we visited the aquarium which was small but interesting. The kids really liked it. We also like the older displays upstairs, especially the Egyptian section. I particularly liked the art gallery and the photos of modern Bolton life.

The museum is a great place to visit. The library is on the ground floor. First floor museum and toilets. Both stairs and lifts. The basement has an aquarium. Wheelchair accessible and also disability friendly. They have a small shop too buy souvenirs and an information desk. Great for adults and children and is free. No cafe they have local... More

Had a lovely couple of hours spent in the museum and aquarium. Museum was very good, had gone to especially see the Egyptian section, saw something I'd never seen before, so learnt something new. Only minor criticism, was the labels didn't give a location of where the items were found. Aquarium was looking a bit 'tired' and run down, needs... More

Lovely museum, not huge but excellent section on Ancient Egypt, and very informative section on local history that is well worth a look. Free entry too which is a bonus.

I am so disappointed with Bolton museum, when was a child right up to the late 1970s I went to the museum and aquarium regularly there was always something to see and if I wanted a bit of quiet I would sit in the aquarium, then go to the cafe for pie and peas. That was then, took my two... More

Bolton Museum is a marvel of northern entrepreneurial spirit. As well as being housed in one of the country's finest inter-war neo-classical buildings (Grade II*) it houses some real surprises. It has the foremost Egyptology section of any provincial town, it has some wonderful Pre-Raphaelite paintings as well as modern classics, and Bolton also has an extensive collection of classical... I have visited Bolton Central Library on many occasions, not just to borrow books but for all the other facilities. Museum and aquarium are second to none. My grandchildren have had many interesting craft days during the holidays and the free film shows for Seniors and families are such a boost to the town centre. I have also use the... More
