A Great FREE Attraction
Jul 2021 • Family
Absolutely marvellous on a wet Wednesday morning with a 9 yr old granddaughter.

Unfortunately the nature and art gallery were closed for essential repairs but the rest of the displays (the history of Bolton down the years and the Egyptology section) were so good and she was enthralled!

The best bit, it’s FREE.

Bolton Council, can you not set up a gratuity box for people who do want to contribute?

Well worth a look.

Although the aquarium is closed at the moment due to covid, the rest of it is open and is fabulous.
It’s all housed in a beautiful building, which helps, and we were warmly welcomed by the staff. There are some lovely local pieces depicting Bolton’s industrial progress including the cotton industry, all very interesting.
We then moved onto the Egyptian exhibition which was excellent with lots of nice pieces to study. There was a short film about the journey into ‘the afterlife’ which was great to watch and learn from.
There was a lovely staircase up to the exhibit area but I think there was a lift (check). The rest was very accessible.
I enjoyed the visit, and spent around an hour and a half sauntering around. I would definitely recommend a trip, and it’s free.

Group visit to Bolton Museum Egyptology Section - excellent !!!
Feb 2020
On 26th Feb 2020 I took a group of 25 "seniors" interested in history and archaeology to Bolton Museum, particularly for the Egyptian section. I'd been in touch with the curator and done a recce a few weeks earlier, and we were able to arrange a guided tour and even a small artefact handling session to follow ! Everyone was so impressed, with the gallery layout, the highly knowledgeable guide who brought it all to life (not forgetting his work experience helper), and the artefacts themselves. Highlight was the exact replica of Thutmose III tomb, with video explaining the story of the journey to the afterlife as depicted in the tomb wall paintings. And not forgetting Bolton's own mystery mummy, perhaps one day we'll find out if he really was from a high-ranking priest's family or even of royal descent ! All this took the whole afternoon (about 3 hours), and we're very grateful for the time and commitment of both the Museum and its staff, who really care !!! Visits are thoroughly recommended for individuals, families, and groups, no matter how little time you have .......... even a quick 20 mins dash around would be worth the time ! I'll definitely be coming back !

Really good and educational

This is really good, lots to see and do. Surprised it’s free, they should charge, it would be worth it.
Glad security is on and patrolling as a few local idiots were attempting to cause problems but fully dealt with by the security staff.

Great Aquarium and Museum - Free Entry and Fully Accessible
Jan 2020
This is a really awesome place to visit. There's so much to see, but it can be done in lots of smaller visits. It's also the most accessible local attraction I've been to - no tied up red alarm strings, accessible toilets on most floors, lifts to all floors including the mezzanine (this is rare), helpful staff/volunteers, and ramps (although one is a bit narrow due to the building age). Really worth a visit and a donation (it's free otherwise)!

A bit of something for everyone!
Jan 2020
Bolton Museum is a free to enter public museum and art gallery in the very heart of Bolton town centre. The museum is housed within the splendid grade II listed Le Mans Crescent near Bolton Town Hall and shares its main entrance with the central library in a purpose built civic centre. The building has good accessibility for the less mobile.
The collections include natural history, Egyptology, archaeology, art, local history, and one of Britain's oldest public aquariums. These are housed, together with Bolton Central Library.
Of particular interest to me was the Egyptology, Archaeology & World Cultures section.
The archaeological collection at Bolton of over 10,000 archaeological objects is one of the largest regional collections in the UK.
There is also a fine collection of Paintings, Drawings and Prints on display and of course a large section that focuses on the history and people of the town itself.
Something for everyone really, plus there is a shop and a large library on the ground floor with a good local archive section.

What a amazing place so much packed in. And it is free
Dec 2019
I had not been to this place since its upgrade and it had been a number of years.

We started off on the ground floor. The freshwater fish aquarium is well worth a look around with fish from the very small up till the very large. Fish from different parts of the world, different colours, shapes and sizes and well worth a look at.

On the first floor there are various sections there is a great egyptian section which is well worth a good look at.

They have a big section on various aspects of local history of Bolton including Samuel Crompton, the railways in Bolton, cultural life, history of BWFC and various other aspects of the history of Bolton. Included in this is a excellent display on the chemical elements, and a natural history section with various stuffed birds and animals.

They have a good art section with various paintings of interest and well worth a look at. Of particular note is a Barbara Hepworth sculpture.

A brilliant local museum in the centre of Bolton which is free. The only down side is it does not have a cafe.

A lot to see in an impressive building
Dec 2019
I was staying in Manchester and after reading the reviews decided to visit Bolton Museum. I was not disappointed, it has an eclectic mix of exhibits covering everything from local trade to the aquarium in the basement. I must say I was really impressed with the Ancient Egypt displays, so well set out and well lit and full of fascinating information and ehibits. It wasn't something that I expected to find and though there is so much of interest in the museum it really is worth visiting for this.
