What is it about steam engines? Perhaps it is nostalgia, perhaps their noise and smell, perhaps the brilliant engineering that makes them work. Whatever it is, it is captured by the Swindon and Cricklade Railway. It has an atmosphere all of its own - friendly of course, but relaxed and exciting too. Maybe it helps that all the staff are volunteers so are unpaid, therefore they are there because they WANT to be there not because they HAVE to! My grandchildren (and me!) love it here. There are so many things to do beside riding the trains. They particularly like the waiting room with the wooden railway in! We can spend many hours here just pottering around and the grandchildren always moan when it is time to leave. Don't expect a very long trip - they are still fundraising to further extend the line - but what there is is lovely. But your ticket is valid all day so you can go multiple times on the trains. There are plenty of other things to do here too like going into the museum, or the 'work tunnel', or a peak into their workshops to see these magnificent beasts being taken apart and renovated. Even the (free) car park has various machines in to wonder at. And a shop and the cafe are worth a visit too. Do check their timetable for 'what's on'. During less busy hours they run diesel engines not steam. They generally open weekends during the spring/ summer/ autumn, and Wednesdays when the children are off school. They also have 'specials' like the vintage weekends where there are lots of other things to see too or the Thomas trains and the Santa train over Christmas. Should you be local you can become one of the team that volunteer here. Whether in the shop, cafe, or go the full hog and help renovate an engine or carriage. Although I cannot volunteer, we have become members because that helps them with their fundraising.

A lovely family experience at an amazing place which is obviously loved and well maintained. All staff were so helpful and friendly. The Santa experience was really good with decent quality gifts for our small children. We’ll be back next year!

What an excellent experience. Went to see Father Christmas with my 3 year old. So much love and care has gone into the set up. The staff are super helpful and friendly and go out of their way to make the children feel special. Extra shout out to the snowman woh was very comical. A really lovely day and we will be back next year.

Just went on the Santa Train experience with our 3 year old and 8 month old - they absolutely loved it! Everywhere decorated beautifully, such a magical grotto area with a very authentic Father (& Mother?!) Christmas. So much effort and creativity has gone into creating a really special experience for us all - thank you!

Went for the Halloween event, absolute waste of time. Arrived to be sent to next station along as no parking. Went to the next station and had to wait an hour for the train upto the main station. Arrived, and really not much to do. A few little games. Paid £40 for our family, all we got was a 5 minute train ride to the next station nothing about the ride was remotely halloween like. Not even decorated. The station is decorated with pumpkins but overall our experience was very disappointing. I would not recommend and will not be returning. Plenty of other free activities around that would have been much more enjoyable.
