Ye Olde Dolphin Inn is the oldest pub in Derby City Centre and located just behind Derby Cathedral making it a prime location to visit at any time. The building is a beautiful old traditional pub with plenty of cosy rooms and an open fire place. Whilst it is quite snug, the outdoor area is quite basic. I feel like besides the beautiful aesthetics the pub offers little else as the beer range is very basic and the food is bang average. I think with a bit of a shame up of drinks and some higher quality food this place could maximise it's potential however, it is still a must visit when in Derby.

The service from all of the staff was perfect, up until a tall gent with glasses was basically abusing the nice bar man with curly hair for no reason, he was calling him horrible names and storming about telling everyone how to do their job, when it seems to everyone else they were doing it fine and keeping everyone happy, and he kept coming back every ten minutes be or so as if he had nothing better to do than belittle him is coming colleagues, which actually really ruined the experience for myself and my friends because everyone was so friendly apart from that one person, it’s the second time now last time he was saying to older gentleman to get up and use their legs and asking in a sarcastic way if they’ve can’t walk when they only asked if he could make their drinks.

Really enjoy the pub in general, everyone is lovely and do their job to make everyone feel good and let them have fun apart from that gentleman, he really shouldn’t be working in public services.
Don’t think we will be coming back anytime soon due to his attitude.

Visited on a busy Friday evening with some friends, great atmosphere in this very old pub with some charming regulars, great ales on draught, good service and well worth a pint or two.

We booked in November for Xmas dinner for people who were coming from different parts of the UK and a couple with a dog, after initially booking the snug we were told later that we couldn't have this as Derby were playing at home, not sure why we were not informed of this when we originally booked but not to worry. We were then told they would set up a table for us in the bar. When we arrived no table set up in the bar and we were informed a table could be set upstairs. After settling in, a joke of a barman said we couldn't have the dog in the restaurant, obviously we were annoyed after telling them that it was their mistake and they needed to sort it out, the barman then said we could sit outside (this being the middle of winter and a 93 year grandmother in the party). We asked to speak to the manager who never came and the joke barman never came back to apologise, the saving grace was a lovely waitress who I hope has found a better place to work. Food was average at best and apart from the waitress the staff were useless. Happy Xmas!

I visited here again just last week so though I would do another review on this establishment. My first review spoke about how ideal the location was and the fact the pub is historic etc so I wont go into that, this will be based off my last trip only. I am yet again left disappointed at the rubbish cider selection they offer here and just general maintenance of the pub, I understand the pub is old but that in its self isn't enough to keep people coming back anymore, there's so many better pubs now. I feel as if people have seen through this place and the novelty has worn off, yes an old pub, useless beer selection and never any new decor. Please get a new drinks menu and do something to change the pub up inside a bit to get people excited about coming again.

Called in to this gem of a pub to enjoy a drink with friends. It was a January evening not that late. The staff were asked if they would add a log to the fire. The simple, and quite frankly rude, reply was a monosyllabic "No". No explanation, no engagement, no effort. They are surrounded by many pubs of as good and better real ale so I shan't be lacking a place to drink if I don't go back soon. The fact that there was none else in the room but us says that others wont be either. Cold pub ...cold staff....cold!

First day out with friend for a few beers in Derby.
Had a good experience in previous 4 bars.
Arrived at dolphin to a very rude bar staff member (Adam).
No one asked our details for track and trace - but he was very rude before taking our order and also rude to other potential customers who had entered the bar from an entrance that was not clearly marked.
When taking my order he was annoyed that I was not speaking to him above quite high perspex screen. (I’m not the tallest!) but I wasn’t trying to be awkward!
The drinks themselves when arrived (promptly) were not of a great quality.
All in all - definitely not the best or most welcoming experience.
Won’t be in a hurry to return. :(

My husband ate here on Saturday night (27/9/14) and were extremely disappointed. I had camembert (on the menu as a main, price at £14.95!!) which was served a bit of rocket, a few tomatoes, a little portion of chutney and crusty bread (part baked bread from the supermarket). The camembert was cold. I did inform the waitress who was very apologetic and she did offer to send it back . Having waited a long time for the meal and given the fact my husband had started his meal, I decided to attempt to eat it anyway (not the best decision I've ever made.....). I managed to eat a somewhat small amount of the camembert and the sides, and a side portion of chips (cooked from frozen!). My husband had steak which he said had not been rested prior to cooking and, as a result, was poor. The best part of the meal was our beer (2 pints each). The bill totalled £48.30. Explaining that this was the worst meal we had ever had and that we would not be back for food again did not reduce our bill!! Complete waist of time and money!!

Being super honest, we’d avoided the dolphin as it’s known for being an old mans pub and we didn’t expect much.

However, dropped in one day and had a meal and Christ have I changed my mind!

Yes - it’s super traditional and very old school pub.

But the beer and the food is great. We had burgers and they where absolutely divine- best burger I’ve had in ages. Very decently priced. Lovely friendly service.

Thank you

The oldest pub in Derby and we was excited to visit after a recommendation of it being great, well we had quite the opposite experience. I went in with a friend and had a beer, the beer my friend ordered came out of a jug rather than from the actual tap and was flat! It looked very unhygienic, the guy did explain that it was served flat but never gave any other description or an offer to try as we clearly looked confused at what he just said. When the jug came out from Under the bar, We couldn't believe it. We took the pint, sat down and couldn't quite believe what happened, we both tried a sip and it was stale and disgusting, we've had Timothy Taylors Ladlord before and never has it been served this way!
When my friend took the pint back because it tasted bad and wasn't what was expected the guy clearly wasn't interested and told us that's just how they serve it, no apologies just arrogance, but then agreed to swap it, but then he changed his mind at the last min and told the barmaid to charge us and cowardly disappeared in the back to avoid confrontation. Terrible service!! We didn't want to spend any more money here as a result and decided to leave. A waste of money and a terrible experience, we was going to eat, but never after that type of customer service. Visit date was on Friday 10th April evening about 4:30pm, that chap needs customer service training!
