Glorious to see the Hydrangeas in bloom
Jul 2020
The Hydrangeas are a real pleasure to see. There are lots in flower at the moment with others coming soon. It looks like new area of the walled garden have been planted with extra specimens.

Once you're through the outer area the entrance/exit to and from the actual walled garden is signed to assist spacing. When you're inside though you can wander around the many paths and plants at will.

Well worth seeking out, lovely enclosed garden and a fragrant walk. Very close to the cafe and toilets and just a short walk to The Abbey . I missed the banana tree ....

A great variety to see
Sep 2019 • Couples
We were visiting a little late in the season this time but there were still varieties in full flower and others worth seeing although past their best. If you're at all into gardening then this is a good place to visit.

There are borders too with other types of plants in the area outside the walled garden. These are accessible all year round.

Seasonal visit

Nice afternoon visit to see the Hydrangeas in full bloom in the walled garden area. There are steps and some narrow grassy paths not suitable for wheelchairs although there is some work in progress in some areas. The park has large areas of grass parkland and the river nearby.

Wonderful Garden
Jul 2019 • Couples
We were knocked out by the brilliant quality and condition of all the hydrangeas. This garden is made beautiful by the sympathetic tree planting. It's set out so well by the paths too I have no hesitation in recommending anyone to spend an hour visiting this garden
There is an open day on Sunday 4th August 10.30am to 3pm with conducted tours at 11am and 2pm I found this info on Hydrangea Derby web site
It's by the cafe so easy to find and did I mention ... IT'S FREE
Beware! They need volunteers :)

A hidden treasure!
Sep 2018 • Couples
We have a growing interest in hydrangea so were very pleased to discover, via Gardener's World that the UK National Collection was in Derby, a relatively short 50min drive for us. Although quite late in the season made a trip there last week.

Parked in the northernmost car park of Darley Park to walk the short distance to the collection. No signposts at the car park but convenient map on the information board. The walk from there is short, but certainly not friendly for wheelchairs or those who are not sturdy of foot with only the main walks being hard surfaced. It gets worse within the Walled Garden that holds the collection with decidedly chair unfriendly terrain!

However, if you can negotiate the uphill walk, the hydrangea that you find, even this late in the season are well worth the effort. This collection is the biggest in the UK and the third largest in the world and you can see many varieties that are unknown outside of very specialised nurseries. The gardens are mainly looked after by volunteers and they have done an excellent job of maintaining the place. All varieties are named so it's easy to take a photo of both the plant and the name label for reference. You can then go away to discover, via the Internet where to get plants, seeds etc as your local garden centre will maybe have little knowledge of the scarcer ones.

The collection in mid-September is still well worth a visit as it is past it's best so we'll return next year earlier to catch the blooms at their peak! Very good but not quite excellent.

National Hydrangea Collection
Aug 2018 • Friends
Have seen it on Gardeners World, had to visit. Run by volunteers. The variety of hydrangeas is huge and you want to have them all. The weather has taken its toll on some of the plants but it's a lovely afternoon out. The walled garden holds the stars of the collection. I was very drawn to the white flowered plants in the collection. You can't buy plants on site but they are labelled so take a photo of the label and look to order online.
