Not the most value for money place to see ( and its free !). In fact, it is a bit of a shame that these ruins are not looked after better. The Georgian additional does not help, and how the quite inappropriate 1960/ 1970 coloured panelling got through civic planning is beyond me. The current state of this Franciscan Friary is shameful, broken glass and apparently a smoking shelter judging by the number of dog ends. Dire and dull.
I suggest that the best thing is a 10 second look around Greyfriars, then walk the 250 yards to Blackfriars - where not only is there something to see. Unlike the Greyfriars building, the Blackfriars has had some substantial investment in preserving the structure, whilst also making it into a viable wedding venue.

Not to be confused with the nearby Blackfriars Monastery, which has substantially more remains, a bit of a garden, and at least being restored.

My quick tour of the remaining bits of Greyfriars was much curtailed, due to the safety fences still surrounding the site. English Heritage has a duty of care to the public, hence the need for the steel safety fencing, but surely a more cost effective remedy would be to secure the C12th century walls. The 1970s Music Library at the west end, and glass of the Market Hall at the east end sandwich this site, and do nothing to enhance the scant roofless remains.

In truth, it will take you about the same time to view this property, as it has to have read this review. There are many more interesting sites to see in Gloucester.

These ruins are quite difficult to find, and when we did find them we were somewhat disappointed. There are some ruined walls and very little else. We couldn't even find any information panels about the building.

This is the site of the former Greyfriars friary, located behind Eastgate Shopping Centre. It is a reasonably sized ruin, but it is impossible to gain access as entirely fenced off, no doubt for safety reasons.

There are a few remaining walls of the Greyfriars monastic house and church down an alley off Southgate. It's small and unprepossessing. With the fences around it, it looks rather scruffy. The fencing is see through, so you can see all you need, and the fencing is close to the walls, so you are not kept away, but the impression is not good.

There is only a small amount of the Greyfriars buildings left standing, and it is not very exciting. It's rather weird that when you approach the friary ruins, they seem to be attached to a more modern office building at the front.
Also the immediate area felt a tad edgey ... spotted the PCSO 'chatting' to the guys with tinies on the nearby bench ... Hmmm

An interesting ruin that must have been repurposed in Georgian times and again in the 1960s. What s shame! But there is an information board to explain the history.

I love walking around Greyfriars, a great part of Gloucesters history…

The remains of a Franciscan Friary, the west end remains in use as a public library.. it is set back from the road.

Definitely worth a look if you are in the area…read up on the history before arriving.

Not a lot left to see but the building would of been very intersting in its heyday. There is an opening showing the old staitcase. The inner walls are still up but thats about it.
Situated behind a building in an office type area.

It is a shame nothing has been made of this building and it is being left to ruin.
I am very surprised at the lack of graffiti on the ancient walls - that I saw anyway.
Sad to see it is nestled between two ugly buildings. A big shame for Gloucester.
I'll give it two star because there is an information board and a coat of arms and, incredibly, there is still quite a lot of the ruins left.
