Having been unable to find a quiet place to sit in the nearby Cathedral due to the Sea Monsters exhibition, I wandered back through the square and found this church open. They were serving snacks, cake and drinks at the back but the rest of the building was lovely and peaceful. I was able to pray undisturbed and light a candle. And nobody asked me for donations! (So I cheerfully left one)
I left here feeling refreshed and ready for the rest of the day ahead. A beautiful little hidden gem which might easily be missed in the shadow of the Cathedral, but well worth a visit.

It’s in the middle of cathedral square and is an impressive late medieval parish church dating from 1407. Built of materials from its predecessor Norman church as well as the nave from the chapel dedicated to St. Thomas A Becket from the abbey (later to become the cathedral) as well as timber brought from Milton Park. Its bells were sounded twice in the sixteenth century for the funerals of Katherine of Aragon and Mary Queen of Scots both of whom are buried in the cathedral. During the Commonwealth it narrowly escaped demolition to provide materials for the repair of the cathedral. Today it is again under repair and perhaps for the first time in its long history lacks a permanent Vicar.

St John the Baptist Church is situated in Cathedral Square and is only a few minutes walk away from Peterborough Cathedral. You might think, why have two such impressive religious buildings in very close proximity - the answer is that he cathedral was for the monks and the church for the townspeople!. The original church was almost entirely demolished in the 1819 rebuild but what we have now is a fine building which includes a very fine south porch, 15th century font, 20th century screens and some excellent stained glass. On entry we were welcomed by the volunteers - there was hand sanitizer available and they were only to happy to point out certain features of interest that brought the church to life.

I have walked past this church many times but never called in. I had some time in my hands so took the opportunity to see in. A good example of perpendicular architecture and sculpted wood roof. Several interesting stained glass windows, some quite new. While I was there, there was an exhibition of photographs from the local photographic society. Really enjoyed it. There is a small café open from 10-12, not open when I visited.

Close to the cathedral, this is an interesting church and worth visiting for its stained glass windows and church architecture. There is a coffee shop and coffee mornings seem popular. Worth visiting.

This is the parish Church of Peterborough, situated in Cathedral Square, facing the cathedral Gateway. It was built in 1406 as the townspeople's church. The present cathedral was then the abbey church for the monks.

The church is simple, but large and imposing. It nearly became the cathedral after the Reformation, before Henry VII spared the Abbey Church. The entrance porch on the south side has a room above (not viewable) where the parish priest would have lived in medieval times.

The window glass is Victorian. The memorials chart the history of the people of Peterborough. The furnishings were restored in the 1920s and renewed in the 2000s.

It is still a working, living church in the busy city centre. The bells are still rung on Sundays.

You will, unfortunately have to pick your moment to see inside, as it is not open all the time.
The best time is on a Saturday morning between 10 and 12, when you can also buy coffee and cake to eat while you admire the church. There is a communion service on Sunday at 11am - no sightseeing during that time. It is also open for week day talks and concerts, Saturday craft fairs and Charity Christmas card sales.

It is a beautiful, peaceful church. If you have the opportunity to see it, please do not hesitate.

A haven in the middle of a busy city. On Saturdays they do good coffee and cake which is quite often better than other places.

So many other churches are spoiled by having buildings crammed around them, but the parish church and old market building are at one end of the big square in the middle of Peterborough. Compared with the cathedral the church is almost plain on the exterior but the yellow stone looks lovely in the sunshine. Luckily the church was open as there was a talk being held inside, nice to see the church being used for community events, so I was able to wander around where ancestors were married and baptised.
