Union wood has some great trails, the only setback is signage is not great and you would need to have good sense of direction to avoid getting lost. The trek u to Union rock is well worth the effort (35 nins or so) but the views from the rock are first class.

From the main carpark on the east side of the forest I set off for my destination of Collooney. The walk is well sign posted and the little diversion up the wooden steps to Union Rock is well worth it, with fantastic views. I got to Collooney way to early for my lift so back tracked along the road and... More

Fantastic opportunity to explore another part of sligo. Slightly off the beaten track as it's not the easiest to find, but you can gain access from collooney near the gulf petrol station. This forest is also used by a mountain bike club so watch out if your going along the bike tracks. There's many routes to explore, especially the route... More

With all the walks available in Ireland (Strandhill, Rosses Point and others) the Union Wood was a litttle dissapointing. was a nice walk , stroll in woods, but nothing special. the trails are not well signed and you can end up walking around the woods versus the lovely quaint path. i recommend the coast area for walks as one is... I always come here when walking the dog and I absouletely love the scenery of the mountains along with the bit of the lake. The problems I have with the walking trail that its not smooth and too rocky. Also you hardly see the lake and couldn't walk around it as its all blocked off by dead trees. I wish... More

Well worth a visit! Great for running energy out of lively kids or for giving the dogs a good run! Lots of tracks to follow. Can take in a side hike up to Union Rock which gives great views over Sligo Bay, Knocknarea, Collooney and surrounding area. If you go around dusk you stand a really good chance of seeing... More

I stood by the edge of the Lough and recited the poem that I was taught in school many years ago. I felt at peace there.

Old oak woodland as well as commercial forestry, within easy reach of Sligo. Plenty of trails for long or short walks, or for mountain biking. Badly signposted, but it doesn't matter; you can't really get too lost!
