With my own family ancestors being caught up in the Irish famines of the19th century, the visit was most meaningful to me. You can’t go to Dublin without visiting this memorial

The impact of the potato famine on the area was immense and although a sculpture can’t encompass all the pain, this does a good job.

Given the magnitude of the famine's devastation on Sligo, it is hard to believe that the City has only recently erected a minor sculpture in a parking lot as its remembrance of this horrendous period of loss.

The fact it's left in the middle of a parking lot with buses in and out beside a pizza take away and pub kind of takes away from the thoughtfulness and emotions. The one in Dublin is isolated alongside the river, still in a city...More

My wife and I were out for a lovely walk along the river and came across this Memorial. A part of Irish history that will never be forgotten.

If you are parking nearby it is worth looking at but not really something that would be considered a "must see" when in the area.

Visitors to Sligo will enjoy a walk along the banks of the river Garavogue. This flat walk winds its way through the city amidst gardens and numerous bridges covered in flowers. There are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants along the way. At one end...More

This is a lovely statue to an unlovely event placed symbolically near the shore from which many "coffin ships" departed. It is also in a car park which didn't bother me. It was funded by the Kennedy family of American fame.
