Have been looking forward to visiting Carrowmore for ages, not quite millennia, but a long time. It was really good to walk around and see the stones and cairns. Unfortunately, the visit would have been better if we didn’t have such young kids with us (3 under six years) as it was hard for them to understand what we were doing there despite our best efforts at making it interesting. It is a challenge to visualise the whole site and its position in the wider landscape. It was also a shame that information centre wasn’t open as would have loved more info to help put everything more into context. However; we met a really informative OPW staff member on the way in who happily shared some of his obvious wealth of knowledge with us. Some snippets he shared made the trip worth it alone and that before we even stepped into the sites. He also pointed us to carrowmore.com to help us interpret what we were looking at during our self guided tour. Our history is fascinating, ever evolving and more complex and interesting than I was taught at school. What a special thing it is to be physically able to connect with it at places like this. Will definitely be back after more research and when we can ditch the kids! Will try take a properly guided tour too.

I visited Carrowmore over 10 years ago, but on my way to Sligo I wanted to stop again to hear the voices of the past whispering among the stones and hills.
It is not just a testimony of the past, it is the sign that certain memories are in us.
Our ancestors speak to us from the stone circle, from the cairns around the central structure that contains a dolmen.
And all without technology only with their presence and thanks to the care with which the site is maintained.
Go there!

This sure was bigger than I expected. It was enjoyable to walk around. I visited on 23rd July 2020 so the visitor centre and toilets were closed because of Covid 19. I was happy enough to wander around the site on my own and other people were doing the same. It was nice not to have to pay the entrance fee. I guess I lost out on learning about the site in the visitor centre but I will try and read up on it online instead.

Very worthwhile stop, just outside Sigo. Even on a rainy day with COVID restrictions in force (visitor centre was closed), we really enjoyed wandering around the site and viewing the many different monuments and tombs. Fascinating.

It wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but we found it interesting. Sadly the information centre was closed to the public and even though the man was there, he said he was not allowed to give us a leaflet because of Covid . I'm sure it would have been much more interesting if we had known the story behind what we were looking at.

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is on Sligo, Ireland. It costs 5 Euros to enter, there is a car park, toilets and small visitors centre.
The tombs at Carrowmore are dated about 3000 BC. The main tomb is one of the largest in Ireland. Many of the tomb foundations are simply large rocks, the area is said to have over 60 tombs.
If you can go on a sunny clear day. The reason is you will see the significance of the surrounding mountain range to the layout of the tombs. This is particularly the case with Knocknarea where a tomb can be seen on the mountain.

Arriving at the visitors centre we were, initially, saddened to see a sign on the door, Cash only. In this day and age who carries cash? None of us had enough cash for a family ticket. However, we were given complimentary passes (I am in contact with the Irish Heritage, to make a donation now home). Thank you for that.
I hadn’t realised how vast the cemetery was but could even see more graves in the distance. I was an interesting few hours wandering. Given a useful information sheet on arrival gave so much more useful ‘education’. We would have missed so much without it. As previous reviews have stated there was a haunting aura in the air, especially when touching the stones.
A visit that was well worth it.

We loved visiting this megalithic cemetery and appreciated the opportunity to tag along on a tour before taking the time to visit on our own. Walking along the dolmens and standing stones is an interesting and evocative experience. Across the street viewing the standing circle with the cows grazing will be a memory to always treasure.

We visited this remarkable place today and had the absolute pleasure of being given a tour by Laura. Her knowledge of the area is outstanding and her enthusiasm is infectious. I came away with a renewed love of all things ancient. Thank you Laura!

Easy journey to get to from the city center. Two sides to the sites, just cross over the road from one to the other very easily.
They also do tours , I did once before , this time I went alone to take some photos.

Great scenery all around you as you see some of history.
